Hi,
Here's an 1836 Large Cent. First question - is this really a Cud? I thought a Cud actually covers the thickness of the coin but this is on the obverse only and only at the rim.

Second question - I know that this coin isn't in great shape but generally would a Cud add to the value of a coin because it is seen as an error or does this not add anything to the value?

Thanks,

Is-This-A-Cud?

It's not huge, but it's definately a Cud. As far as adding value, it wouldn't affect the value of the coin that much for me, but it's still neat.

a Cud is usually "at the rim". what causes it is a piece of the die has fallen off and the metal is pushed into that void when struck which makes the Cud on the rim

Believe it or not that Cud actually greatly REDUCES the value of this coin. This is an 1836 N-6 and it almost ALWAYS comes with that Cud. Without the Cud it is extremely rare and worth a lot more money from die state specialists. With the Cud it's an R-2 coin. The no Cud is an R-7+ coin
