Still trying to get comfortable with all the acronyms and abbreviations in regards to coin collecting, so please bear with me as I ask the following:

What is meant by "red" or "brown" or "red brown"?

As I attempt to complete the Lincoln Penny collection I started as a kid (I'm in my 40's now), how common are "scammers" on places like ebay?

Is there anyplace within this website where I can look at pictures of various grades of similar coins so I can get an idea of what to expect from any future purchases?

Lastly, what about the crud that might be seen on any pennies I currently own? Leave it as-is and look for a better example if it bothers me too much? Or try to remove it? (I'm guessing I shouldn't touch it)

Any do's or don't for a new guy are hugely appreciated...

Welcome Tom!

Red, red-brown and brown are terms used to describe the coloring of uncirculated (typically) copper coins. I have seen the following definitions: Red coins have almost all of their original red color; a red-brown coin is starting to tone but still has significant red color showing while a brown coin has fully toned to the brown color we are all familiar with.

I have had pretty good experiences on ebay but I wouldn't buy high-value coins unless they are certified or from a trusted source. No raw 1909-S VDB's or 14-D's for me.

If you follow the grading forums you can see pictures and assigned grades for many different coins.

For crud, many people soak in acetone to remove organic materials. There's also some products to remove verdigris (Verdi-Gone). You can do some searches to find threads on them.

Welcome to the forum!

RED - Coin has the original, mint color, at least 95% of it.
RED/BROWN - 95-5% original red mint color
BROWN - < 5% of original red mint color

In general, I'd stay away from ebay. The seller pictures can be very deceiving and a lot of coins are damaged, cleaned or improperly graded. For the most part, grading Lincolns is easy, especially the Wheat series. I suggest you spend a lot of time reading the grading forum section here and looking at slabbed coins on ha.com. That will help develop your grading skills. If you're looking to buy coins, this forum is a great place to do so, but you'll need to increase your post count before you're permitted. See the rules posted in the For Sale forum section.

As far as "crud", we'd have to see it before we can suggest a course of action. Please post some pictures for us.

As for pics and grading, I find that PCGS photo grade is a valuable tool:
