I believe that is normal for that year. Now, if you can find that same mintmark on a '46, I think you'll have something special.

Depends on how you look at it. It is upside down...problem is, all of them are that way.

The ball was supposed to be on the bottom and the cut-off part on the top - but the die shop punched them all in upside down.

Only known exception is 1946S - for which there is one known die where the mintmark was punched right side up.

So technically, the 46-S isn't inverted at all. Interesting, havn't heard of that until now.

I guess the guys at the mint weren't well studied on fonts...but when a similar font is used in typography, the larger serif is always on the bottom.
