This email conversation pretty much tells the story... IDIOT: So are these acid dated? As a collector I am not looking for acid dated coins and would prefer that you list it as acid date. The coin changes and is not as attractive when treating with acid. I sometimes use these as fillers but replace them as I can afford a nicer coin. I do treat poor coins that I get by mistake to bring out the date. Minimal treatment for dating only is recommended and not coating the whole coin. ME: Let me see if I understand what you are telling me: YOU PREFER that I should list my coins as "acid dates", right? I should do that to accommodate YOU and YOUR preferences. Is that about right? Also, according to your "recommendation" if I'm going to treat these coins at all I should only do it on the date and not treat the whole coin, is that about right? I guess that I should just turn my back on a 7 year history of being VERY SUCCESSFUL at what I do and consult with you about everything I do from this point forward. After all, YOU are the smartest person ever, right? Just so that we're clear on this, I'll NEVER call it "acid dating" because it's NOT acid that I use. If you must know (because you obviously do not know) it's a BASE which is the dead opposite of acid. And I am totally within my bounds, according to ebay (whom I answer to and NOT TO YOU) to list, describe and sell them exactly as I do. I totally do NOT care one iota about what you do with your fillers or the circumstances under which you treat "poor coins". Do you have the slightest idea how silly your entire message to me sounded? IDIOT: If you look at my message again it was a question. Any alteration of the coin would be undesirable. You may not answer to me but have you ever heard that the customer was always right..... ME: You are not a customer and you will NOT BE a customer. You are some "holier than thou" someone who is sticking his nose in where it has no business being. You have no idea what you're talking about. You are telling me, in essence, that I am ruining these coins. Here's a news flash: Before I worked on these nickels they had no date and almost no detail. When I was done with them they had a date and some detail. How is that ruining them? How is that making them less desirable? When I want YOUR advice, I'll go shoot myself. IDIOT: I do not want to do business with you, thank you. ME: Good. Have you ever purchased from me? If so, I would be willing to buy the coins back from you. You don't deserve them. Oh...and thanks for this whole, long, fun email exchange. I'll be posting it on my website (buffaloreincarnations.com) a little later this week. People will love it! IDIOT: I would not post this anywhere since it would be illegal, and I will be reporting this to ebay ME: Go ahead. It's NOT illegal, but it will sure be embarrassing to one of us. Wanna guess which one?

Aren't all your auctions clearly stated with "acid dated?"
Wait... has this guy bought anything from you yet? It sounds like he hasn't right?

No he has NOT. No my auctions don't state "acid dated". The whole coin is treated, not just the date, and it's NOT acid!

Hm. You could have answered "no". But I guess there's no fun in simple answers.

Not too smart. It's just a matter of time before this catches up with you. Eventually you'll do this and the potential buyer will call a half dozen of their friends and before you know it you have a half dozen negs you can't do squat about. Then you'll wonder why your prices suck.
A word of advice. Don't even answer these goofballs. Delete the email, put them on your bbl, and move on.

Gotta agree here with Scubu. Learn to "pick your fights on the Bay". Yeah there are tons of idiots out there (buyers and sellers). Had I received the first email question my response would have been to block the guy and delete the email. It was clear from the beginning this wasn't going to end well.

To be completely honest, I am not really sure why you went off on this guy like you did. Perhaps he did not read the listing, but it seems like it would have been better to just answer the question.

steev, I gotta say that I would have handled that differently myself. Yes this goofball started off badly implicitly criticizing what you are doing, but I don't believe your response was appropriate and only served to escalate the situation. Much better to just ignore morons on the internet.

It seems that someone has a bad attitude about "acid dated" coins. I see one brief question that can be answered with a simple "no" and then alot of extraneous pontificating. I certainly would not appreciate someone telling me how to run my auctions either and your auctions have one of the clearest disclaimers around. You would have to be a couple notches below Forrest Gump to not understand what you are selling I see no reason for a non-customer to antagonize a seller to that extent and there really is no reason at all for a non-customer to be saying "the customer is always right" which is one of the biggest falsehoods in business

When I posted this whole exchange I recognized that there was a pretty fair chance that you all might react to it as you have and, trust me, I appreciate your good counsel. Actually, it's a tribute to your civility that none of you has told me that I, too, am an idiot!
I went off on the guy simply because, with his totally unsolicited thoughts and advice, he touched a particular nerve within me that's always a bit raw. He may have asked a question that could have been answered with a simple yes or no, but if you go back and read his whole first email you know darn well he had his mind made up whether the coins were "acid dated" or not. Why else would he give his opinion about when and how to do it?
Anyway...although I haven't revealed the guy's identity, he actually has an absolutely stellar selling record. So last night, probably before most of you posted your comments, I wrote him again and commended him on his selling record and suggested he should stick to that and refrain from handing out unsolicited advice.
He agreed and so we kissed and made up!

weerdsteev, Your knowledge on this board about Buffaloes and your posts have been outstanding. Your advice to members were always right on.The surprise to me is why would you even waste your time with some whose knowledge is far inferior to yours. He must have hit a hot button...I would put him in the recycle bin!

Yeah, we've all said and done things we later wish we hadn't. Not that this is an example of that, but bad days happen to us all.
