Ouch.....the proof 2008 one cost me $31.95 plus shipping when I ordered one in June of 2008.
Silver was around $15 to $16.50 back then.
$45.95 plus shipping is a bit heavy.

They'll probably sell like hotcakes regardless of the price...think I'll pass on these till silver drops back down.

what are the mintage expectations (if any). I looked and couldn't find any. That will play a big factor if I buy one or not. Any thing south of 200k and I'm buying as many as I can.

I don't know that they set the mintage up front. Thought they mint whatever the public demands for awhile until it gets late in the year and they close things up for the year?

I will buy one since I have been building a complete set of them. I am on the subscription list. I am use to paying that much or more for them.

Mintage on the Proof Gold Eagles is limited. I am talking less than 50,000, mostly toward 25,000 or less with most. This is going to drive the price up, certainly. I do not understand the compressed selling period, especially right at Christmas. Moreover, the new annual sets will be issued in January, not August and later. We are being asked to ante up large chunks of change right at the Holidays. The bullion coins will come in a hurry, and everything we used to consider important about our purchases WILL change once folks see these bullion coins. They are not being hubbed, and the design is going to be cut right from the molds into the steel dies, making a clean, concise picture. Never anything like it in US coins. Gonna shatter world industry ideas of artistic merit. Might even win some World design awards, once these are seen. That will drive prices on those. But this is a wealthy collector's game now, unless they smooth the purchase periods over the course of a year. Personally, we may need to take out a loan, or skip purchase of some items altogether. That is not good for the mint. I hope they even out releases next year. Holy moly.

I'm the kind of collector that would love to get something cheaper if possible, but I am concerned about mintage levels on this particular coin. Makes me wonder if I should just bite the bullet and order one regardless of a $20 +/- markup.

I updated my subscription from one to two. I have a feeling the mintage on these will be fairly low say less than 400k. Look in some of the price guides for silver eagles for mintages around that number or less. Some are quite valuable, that coupled with this being the first one back after skipping a year I think will make these some very valuable pieces in the future at least for a while anyways. Folks buying more than one for flipping will want to flip these ASAP (within a month or two of getting them say) to make a high premium on their money. Now, if the mint comes out in the next few weeks and announces they will try and mint 700k- 1mil then I will reconsider buying two, but as of right now I'm gonna try and get two. We'll see....

Quote: Thought they mint whatever the public demands for awhile until it gets late in the year and they close things up for the year? It varies. SOme years they have set maximums ahead of time, other times they have minted to order. One thing to consider is that they usually cut off silver eagle coinage in early Dec and they aren't starting sales for these until lat November. (On the other hand they probably have a ton of subscription orders already waiting so the sale period may be short but the coinage may not be. Very hard to say at this point.

I have a feeling we'll be witnessing the birth of another $5000 ASE.

Well.....I've had my "subscription" in for the Proof and Burnished Uncirc. for 300 years now........it'd be a nice surprise. Hard to say though, if the 2010 will be "the one to have" or not.
