I am currently using distilled water and a lot of patience. Is there anything that will not harm the coin but better to use?
Probably a dumb question but desert patina, good or bad for long term condition of coin.

I used a water-based solution called "Krud-Kutter". It is a rust remover and is working on some cheap "pig-in-a-poke" ancients I bought over the net. As I just started this morning, I can't tell if damage is being done, but mine were unreadable after using soap, mild jewelry cleaner, etc. Try it on one that is brown in color.

Cool. I have had some I bought on ebay soaking in distilled water now for near a year. Stuff is falling off of them and I can see some details. I have not used a brush yet, guess that would help, a soft toothbrush maybe.

Do NOT use acids or electrolysis (and a "rust remover" is probably acidic) on uncleaned ancient coins, unless you've tried everything else and it hasn't worked. Both these techniques will remove the patina from bronze coins - something that is best to be avoided id at all possible, since the patina usually preserves the fine detail better than the actual metal of the coin has.
