I think it would be great to build sets of birth year money. I was born in a great year for coins AND paper money. 1954!

It would be very cool to build sets of birth year money as part of a family tree/history archive I think. Individuals info, family AND social history all in one. Quite a project to take on when you start blending your money collecting hobbies with family history and geneology projects, linking them together. It sure would be an awesome way to fill spare time, and leave it all behind one day, for the younger generations.

I have proof and mint sets for myself and everyone in my immediate family. If there were ASE made in their birth year I also have one of those (my kids). I also have a few commemoratives that were made the years my kids were born as well but each of us have proof and mint sets of our birth year

Would you consider S/N's of birth dates? I can only imagine that these would be very hard to find, but I have a small run of bills ($1's or $2's, I don't have them with me at work) that have "older" birthdates; (example only) B19360823A.

I will post the actual s/n.

G'day, it took me 3 years to complete a collection of English coins of 1820, the year the first of my ancestors came to Australia.
I've started building a set of American coins of 1853, the year one ancestor came from Philadelphia to Oz.
And yes, I've got the birth years of my Mum and Dad, and myself.
Next, I will start a collection of European coins of 1914.

This is all awesome to hear. I like hearing about the signifigant and special years ideas too, like anniversaries. I like the idea of birth year of a new Century too, like 2000.

Paper money serial numbers showing birthdates (day, month, year) would be amazing. Imagine getting one of each denomination if you could find all 3 on each if such numbers combinations were printed! Canadian notes only have 7 numbers on them though so if both month and day are two digit ones, like 11th month and 31st day as examples, then you'd have to drop a number or something to fit all 3 in. I know some people like saving special dates or numbers, like 7 digit phone numbers

I guess collecting ideas types can be pretty unique and endless ideas to choose from when collecting coins or paper money.

My daughter is getting a 1992 Proof Set next week for her 18th birthday...the only way I can surprise her because I certainly can't pick out clothes. But yes, they make great gifts for almost anyone.
Rest in Peace

I've been saving coins around the world from my birth year and even from 100 years previous. Since I was born not far from one mint, I have a set bearing one USA mint mark.

I love the idea of giving birth year sets as birthday gifts. Imagine being a kid and getting one for each and every year on your birthday, since birth!? I've been considering maybe this Christmas to give one each to my 2 grown kids for their years of birth. We're all Canadian born, so Canadian coins they would be, 1975 and 1983, although my youngests Dad is American born and raised in Dallas Texas in 1933. I'll leave the US coins to her Dad to lay on her though

I did mine, my wifes and both kids, then started on mine minus 100 years - so 1868. I've only purchased four of those so far, slow going, not at the top of the priority list. My son, on his own has also picked up a couple from minus 100 for him....very cool, including a love token Half Dime.

I only want one birth-year coin - the PCGS PR69DCAM Jefferson nickel which is 1 of 1 and the oldest PR69DCAM Jefferson. What do you think of my chances of finding and buying this one?

Me neither.

My favorite items from 1966 are my Canada Prooflike Set (four 80% Silver coins!)
and my Australian Decimal 80% Silver Round Fifty-Cent coins.

I do have a high-grade U.S. 1966 Special Mint Set, of course.

Also, I couldn't resist getting a roll of 1966 JFK's from americanamafia

I was just saying to myself, SELF, a birth year collection would be rather small but then you mentioned this and made me think. Now that would be really interesting. A Birthyear collection from as many countries as possible. Or if you have a family tree where you know what realatives came from where, such a Birthyear collection with coins from those countries along with stories of why there.
Additional stamps too could be added. A Red Book or Blue Book or both from that date would be also something to add.
Every year now for many, many years I give some people a Proof set, Uncirculated set, a Red Book for Christmas Presents. Used to be about 20 of each. Over the years, due to people moving away or passing away, the quantity has drindled to about 8.
