I have been going to my local bank for about 6months now picking up what ever good finds I can. I mostly look for Ken. Halfs Been pretty lucky with this bank cause they had a bunch of rolls they were saving up to send back to the fed. On my last visit the teller smiles and says we have $200 someone just cashed in Kennedy's. I was so excited I took $180 for now and would be back in 20 min to get the others. So I took the first haul home got the money for the rest when I get back the same teller I always deal with says you know I go through all these and take out all the silver ones. I couldn't believe what she had just told me. I've bought about $200 prior to this and shes never said anything. After the first 2 time I went in and asked for them she asked me what I needed them for and I didn't lie I said I look for anything worth the face value of the coin. I should of knew right then something was up cause she gave me a Grin that was so evil. I haven't come across one silver part silver half yet. So when she said this I knew now why I've had such bad luck. So she smiles once again and says so do you still want these. I smiled and said OHH YEA like their was something she could of missed. And haven't been back to the bank for halves. So do you think its right she takes out all the silver coins for her self. And yes I did ask her if she keeps them and sure enough she sells them on ebay. And saves them. Or am I just being a hater, I do think she should of told me sooner. I cant help to think theirs something wrong with that.

If you were a bank teller, wouldn't you try to go through the money and rolls you could and replace it without interfering with your regular teller job? I would spend my lunch and break time going through anything I could and replace what I took with my regular money.
I think what gets your goat is the grin you got. There was a time and it could get me going again I suppose when people would rub stuff in my face that they were lucky to get and I wasn't.
Today, I think I realize it isn't all that important. I hope I don't brag about my good luck to make other people jealous, which is pretty much what this teller is trying to do to you.
I would just find another bank rather than let her rent space in your head.
Obviously that hole has been fished.

As long as it doesn't interfere with her job, of course it's OK for a bank teller (or a branch manager) to sift through their own cash drawers. We've had bank tellers come here on the forum and post "I've got the dream job" kinds of threads, and people ooooh and aaah at their finds. And she doesn't have to tell you she's been going through them, either.

A bank's job is to give you the amount of money you ask for. They can try to give you certain kinds of money (eg. half-dollars) but they're under no legal obligation to do so; they do it as a customer service. They're certainly under no obligation to make sure the half-dollars they give you are "unsearched" for silver.

If you find a bank branch where someone is already searching for silver (either a bank worker there, or another collector making withdrawls there) simply avoid that branch and use another one as your source. Use the unproductive branch as your dump bank, if it's convenient.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

she is the first person in the chain and if she see's them and buys them than I see nothing wrong with it. It is just like any cashier that would buy any bills, coins from their cash register before they are handed out as change. I know we don't like to think about it this way but the people at the bank are also people that have hobbies and also are looking to make as much money as they can so if they see something worth more than face value and they know how to recognize it I see nothing wrong with them keeping them for themselves. I am sure if you were to ask anyone on this forum if they worked at a bank and saw some silver would they buy it for face value, if they were honest they would tell you "yes". Allot of members here have come in showing coins they have found in their cash register and everyone thinks thats alright so I see no difference with this just because they work in a bank. If you wanted to be technical about it I guess the owner of the store/bank could say it is rightfully theirs since they are paying their employees to work there and its their money and if something in their money is worth more than face value you should give it to them. Now this is unless someone else buys the coins and gets lucky and finds something then they just overlooked it. I am sure the banks/stores do not care as long as they do their job and the money is replaced. But what if the manager was a collector, and he went through every cent that went out of his office before it hit the counter, would he be wrong for going through the coins before some customer had a chance to do so? If you did work at a business like that and noticed someone buying up change would you tell each one of them that you have already went through them looking for anything good? Allot of people get change for their business from banks so you would be telling allot of people for no reason

Edit: when I started typing this there were no replies but I see now I am not the only one with this opinion

This all depends on the bank and where it is located. By me anyone working in a Bank of America place can not hoard, stash, put aside anything for anyone or themselves. To do so is grounds for dismissal. Even if a teller had a mountain of Silver coins come in, they have to put them in a plastic bag to be sent out for counting. No teller or bank official is allowed to take any of them out for themselves. If a teller opens a drawer and you see a certain coin in it and ask for it and they hand it to you, again, grounds for dismissal. NO customer is to be given preferencial service. It's their company and they can run it the way they like and if you don't like what they do, remember there are possibly many hundreds of other banks in this area.
One bank I go to most people there know me by first name and yet when and if I ask for anything special, I'm always told sorry, banks policy is NO.
If you had a buisness you too could run it the way you want and if you loose customers due to your policies, that is your buisness.

Sounds like it's just a perk of the job. I'd do it if I could and had that gig.

I wouldn't get too upset. It seems like you were both not completely forthcoming. By your own account you never said anything about silver.

hey either way you have a new dump bank :). If it did make you mad you could go dump a bunch of clad halves and she would probbly waste her own time going through them. It would be an eye for an eye :)

Honestly, as bad as this is. I get kind of a "ill show you" attitude when people do that kinda stuff to me. (the smirk thing)

I would go back one day and get a bunch of halves from her and ask

You - "Say, I thought you said you got all the silver ones out already?"
Her - nod, acknowledgment, etc
*with a slightly puzzled look*
You - "Huh, ok. well you should probably broaden your search a little."
You - *smirk*

and then never go back.

just carl,

I use to work for bank of america and while what you said is true from my experience no one in my locations ever enforced this policy. I did collect all of the silver coins for myself when I came across them like many people due but I never lead a customer to believe I didnt. I was always upfront with everyone about it and no one ever had a problem with it. I just considered it one of the perks of the job. It was about the only part of the job I did like.

I used to be a bank telled and when through the rolls I got all the time, the only gentleman at the bank who ordered halves figured out fast what I was doing and stopped asking for customer rolls instead he would order more boxes.

I ordered 2 $500 boxes of halves from one of my banks and the bank manager asked me the same thing, "what do you need them for?" I felt like telling her, what difference does it make? But yeah, can't blame em for going through the rolls if that's allowed, wouldn't you?

Well,if it upsets you that much, you can always talk to the manager and find out if they have a policy against it.If I were in charge,I would not want the teller flaunting the fact and perhaps making customers angry.

The teller has the preference if she wants the silver first so you dont have any argument in this. I think the important lesson you have learned here is that this is now your new dump bank. Dump everything you have on her and let her spend her time searching your dumps. Dump hard, dump often.
