I just searched 1,316 Quarters that I've saved from circulation for the past year and a half. It's definitely true that quarters seem to wear down quickly, I didn't find very many previous to the 90s that were in good shape. This is my tally of how many of each quarter I had (I didn't bother seperating the mint marks, most are Ds here in Texas): 1964: 1 1965-1998: 574 (44%) 99-NJ: 15 99-PA: 7 99-DE: 16 99-GA: 18 99-CT: 16 Total 99: 72 00-MA: 18 00-NH: 14 00-VA: 29 00-MD: 20 00-SC: 19 Total 00: 100 01-NY: 24 01-KY:12 01-NC: 12 01-VT: 8 01-RI: 13 Total 01: 69 02-TN: 18 02-MS: 16 02-IN: 14 02-LA: 23 02-OH: 5 Total 02: 76 03-AR: 13 03-MO: 8 03-ME: 5 03-AL: 9 03-IL: 4 Total 03: 39 04-MI: 9 04-TXL: 15 04-FL: 12 04-IA: 3 04-WI: 9 Total 04: 48 05-CA: 12 05-MN: 11 05-OR: 22 05-KS: 16 05-WV: 16 Total 05: 77 06-NE: 15 06-NV: 12 06-CO: 14 06-ND: 10 06-SD: 17 Total 06: 68 07-WA: 19 07-MT: 11 07-WY: 16 07-ID: 19 07-UT: 18 Total 07: 83 08-OK: 15 08-AZ: 20 08-NM: 22 08-AK: 14 08 - HA: 23 Total 08: 94 09-DC: 2 09-VI: 2 09-Guam: 3 09-PR: 4 09-AS: 3 09-NMI: 1 Total 09: 15 About 56% of the quarters were State Quarters or US Territory Quarters. Least found State Quarters: <edit>Iowa (3), Illinois (4), Maine(5), Ohio(5) Most found State Quarters: Virginia (29), New York (24), Louisiana (23), Hawaii (23), Oregon (22), New Mexico (22) I've discovered that it's pretty much a thorough waste of time to search through quarters as most of you have observed already. Only 1 Silver quarter, and there weren't any nice picks worth speaking about. Unless you want to put together a circulated set of State Quarters. In that case, it'd be better just to pay the extra couple bucks over face value and buy a full set of Uncirculated State Quarters. If any of you have made similar or contrasting observations please comment below! AC *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by ACWhammy 10/10/2010 2:45 pm

Part of the fun of collecting for me is finding a coin in my pocket change that I don't have, or otherwise any interesting coins that I happen to fancy. The State Quarters series is what got me into more serious collecting, and it was always a thrill to find a new State Quarter to fill a hole in my album. I will never buy a State Quarter to fill a hole in my album; why pay a premium for coins that are abundant in pocket change?

I guess we know why no quarter threads last on this site. Nothing to find. I have several quarter books going right now but I rarely buy rolls to search. Look through my change and eventually they all show up. I only have a few of the pre 65 silvers. They just never got my attention enough to put the effort in to completing that set.

1,316 quarters is only $329.00. Compare that to 1,316 dimes, which would be just over a half-box ($131.60). In a box of dimes, I'm going to say you'll find at least one or two silvers, on average. A box of dimes is 2,500 dimes. Out of only 1,316 quarters, you found only one silver? I'd expect that same find frequency out of 1,316 dimes. Do you see where I'm going with this? The silver find frequencies on quarters are pretty much the same as on dimes.

Your dime rate is correct in my experience - around 1.5 silver dimes per box, but I'm going to guess that the quarter rate isn't any higher than one silver quarter in four boxes. People find them in customer wrapped rolls every so often, but I haven't heard of anyone pulling them out of boxes on a regular basis.

I agree that searching quarters is not good for finding silver, but putting together circulated sets is always fun, and it doesn't cost you anything of course. If you get bored with it, you just spend it. It's a great way to introduce kids to the hobby.

If you go by his 1 in 1,316, they're the same. I don't search quarters, so I can't opine from experience.

Consider yourself very lucky if you can even find a 65-98 in AU condition.

It's a wonder that people just keep ignoring these things. When the economy improves there will be a flood of the new quarters coming in and the proportion of old ones will just keep falling. It won't be too long till they have to start removing some of the old coins since they are getting too thin to work in machines and then the proportion of eagle reverse coins will drop like a rock and even XF's will be scarce.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I don't know about that - even though the quarter is probably the most heavily circulated coin, that cupronickel is really tough. I think you'll be able to find pre-99s for many more years. And they'll be so beat to heck (but still machine readable) that no one will want to pluck them out of circulation! But you're absolutely right about finding AU eagle backs in circulation - few and far between already!
