I haven't started roll hunting full-on but plan to do so as soon as I've finished sorting/inspecting my family's hoard of old coins. Anticipating acute withdrawal symptoms, I plan to begin roll hunting at that point in time So I'm following the RH forum threads with interest. I haven't entirely escaped the urge to begin roll hunting (and pocket hunting) though. While passing through the Miami airport recently I bought a roll of cents and a roll of dimes at Starbucks (just some ordinary copper, nothing interesting, no valuable varieties). At my local bank yesterday I asked to buy some rolls. Blank look from teller, who appeared to be about 14 years old. She glanced down at her tray, there was one lonely CWR of cents. She said she had no rolls. I pointedly looked at her tray, and she said 'Oh, you want to buy this?' [nodded]. I asked if she could check other tellers or wherever they keep rolls, that I was particularly interested in halves and dollars, particularly the large dollars. She went around the corner, came back, and said she had 21 dollar coins. 'Large dollars or small?' I asked. 'Large'. Yay! Wait, no yay. She returned with a tray of very worn small dollar coins. I thanked her but passed. I did buy the roll of cents. Might have one or two minor varieties. ~20% copper, no wheats. Oh... and there were 52 coins, so I made at least 2 cents (that's about one toe's worth of happy dance) None of the other tellers had rolls. It was a Saturday and the teller thought I'd have better luck on a weekday. Hmmm, so it sounds like *all* of their rolls are CWR? Seems odd, but then she didn't really know much about it. Maybe I should go by the main branch. Last night I checked the bottom of my purse for change. 4 cents. 2 shields, didn't inspect them. A 1992-D and a 1998, both in AU condition. Flipped over the 92-D, Close AM! Wow! Plugged in the scope, took a pic of the feature. Took a look at the '98. Wide AM! Double wow! That was just too good to be true! And it was too good to be true. I had picked up the '98 when I thought I had the '92 in hand. Duh. Momentary thrill No matter... I'm hopelessly hooked anyway. Edited by ThisIsFun 01/21/2013 07:24 am

Quote: 'Large dollars or small?' Yes, super-size those dollars! How cute! It has been enjoyable to read your threads from your first "this is fun but will probably end" to now, inspecting any bit of shiny metal that comes within 10 feet of you. Keep up the good work in the hunt!

Called both of the main banks in my area yesterday to inquire about rolls. Half dollars and dollars? Neither bank has them and neither will order them for me. "Those aren't used in circulation. Try Kmart" I'm not making this up. We need an eyeroll emoticon.

Oh My, Kmart! I understand the banks stance on that though. I cannot tell you the last time I have seen a Kennedy in circulation; my hubby puts any he receives aside because he likes them so much. Unless there is a demand for the coin, they jsut do not stock it. The branch manager probably feels it is not worth the tellers' time to do this. I know other members have had some success by getting to know the tellers individually and buying the coins from the till if they time it correctly. Or maybe a different bank would do that.

Step 1. Find a bank that will order coin for you - some won't order at all. Step 2. Setup an account with them and be-friend the person who sets up your account. Mention you are a coin collector. Step 3. Go to the supermarket and pickup some fruit, veggie, pastry platters and some candy. Step 4. Deliver said goodies + a note asking for help in ordering 50c boxes.
I would be very surprised if they said no at that point :)

Yesterday I put an ad on an online message board in my small community letting people know I'd cash out their accumulated pocket change if they didn't want to roll it and take it to the bank. All the banks where I live require customers to roll the coins and put their name and account number on the roll... and they leave that info on the roll if they sell it to the next person!
Got a response already from someone who has 80 lbs of hand-rolled coins and 10-20 lbs of loose coins. Think I'll take an assortment of those and see what's there and what kind of shape they're in before committing to the whole hoard.
Not expecting much/any silver but I sure enjoy looking for varieties.

Yeah, I've been hooked for awhile. I find it relaxing. Neither of my banks are very helpful. Every time I withdraw cash they ask if I am closing my account. I think that they would like to do away with cash entirely.

ThisIsFun, that sounds like fun. Please make sure you take all precautions necessary to keep yourself safe!
Just the mom coming out in me - I had another heart to heart with my 13 yo abou the internet (he did not do anything but some of his friends...) You could be 89 years old and you STILL get the same speech from me!

Thanks, Kelly. I will make all such exchanges during the daytime at my office, with other people and security cameras around.
What do you guys think of the banks' practice of leaving customer names and account numbers on rolls? Doesn't that seem... crazy? Like a callous disregard for customer privacy and identity security?

I asked for some cwr's the other day and they had black marks. I told her that's another coin hunters mark and she said she had just been marking out a customers account number and that's what the marks were.

I went to my bank today to cash in about $150 worth of rolls and I was made to write my account number on each one. I've never had any problem cashing in rolls in the past with any other banks in my area... I'll guess I'll just avoid going to my actual bank to get/dump rolls from now on

Fun thread. I would never write my account on them. Or just make it off by 1 number. If they ask, "oops". It's certainly a security issue.

BernieZ-- I think that's how they credit your account. No correct account number on roll = no money deposited to your account. I've found a better alternative to the bank return nuisance. I'll sell them to stores A couple of convenience stores near me will buy rolls if they need them. A pharmacy below my office will do the same. Last week I popped downstairs to the pharmacy (needed a penny candy fix, 'penny' candy now being a misnomer) and saw that their register drawer was overflowing with quarters. I'm in the mood to look for certain State Quarter varieties so I asked if I could look through their quarters and change them out. No problem! I pulled ~$10 worth, exchanged for currency. Think I'll make it a weekly thing. The pharmacy mentioned that they always need pennies-- yay, new place to dump unlabeled cent rolls! I probably wouldn't even have to actually roll them for these folks. I asked one convenience store if I could look through their change. Yep. There's another nearby where they know me and like me-- bet they'll let me do the same when they are not busy. Obviously I'm not sorting through box quantities so this strategy wouldn't work for you high volume searchers.
