I get a roll or two of dollar coins and halves for my cash drawer at my store each week and search the halves for silver. The only thing I usually look for in the dollars is near date 79 SBA's and 81 SBA's, so on the dollars I will usually just look quickly at the edge before dumping them in the drawer. This week's roll had two non-SBA coins whose edge looked slightly different. The edge inscription looked sharper, but I noticed a distinct raised line on these two. Pulled them out and, yep, they had three equally spaced raised lines on the edges. Got out my loupe (my eyes aren't what they once were) to confirm, and yes, two 2007 S dollars in this roll. Now for the strange part - not only were they as well worn as small dollars get, that is, discolored, flat looking fields, wear on the portraits hair, etc., but both were the same - both John Adams. If someone stole a proof set and broke it up I would expect two different Presidents. I can come up with no reasonable scenario for finding two of the same impaired proofs in the same roll. Any ideas? Also, what to do with them. I have a hard time spending proof coins, even though these are highly impaired.

i believe they sold singles of the 2007 proof dollars, maybe someone bought several of them and decided to spend them once times got tough or they were stolen and spent

The raised lines on the edge are caused by the segmented collar that adds the edge lettering to proofs.

well for face value you should keep em for sure. Might not be the last you come across.
If nothing else there are plenty of people on the forum that would probably pay face value + postage for it.

Went back and checked the rest of the roll more carefully. Missed a James Madison proof, so there were 3 proofs in this roll. Bio, I realized the lines were from the collar, that's what made me check for the S mint mark.

Andrew, there are 3 if you read the second comment, 2 John Adams and a James Madison. Will gladly sell all three for face plus shipping.

Take care in finding out if these were broken from the Signature dollar issues. The Signature series fetch huge dollars. In impaired, these might fetch good returns. I bought five each of the individuals while they were available, but not the lauded Signatures, which go for thousands EACH, in Pf 70. You are indeed lucky.

I must confess I have never heard of the Signature series. What was it and how do you identify if a coin came from it?

Quote: Take care in finding out if these were broken from the Signature dollar issues How is one supposed to figure that out when all of the Prez proof issues are identical? Quote: which go for thousands EACH, in Pf 70 The only reference I can find to any "signature" is a special slab label put out by PCGS and those are definitely not worth anything close to $1000. The highest PR70 listed at the usually overpriced PCGS price guide is only $290 and I currently a see PCGS PR70 Adams with a $95 BIN on ebay.
