Please review this coin and note that the true color should appear like a light copper toned one instead of a normal light nickel colored five cent coin.

My camera was unable to capture the exact true color of this coin.

I would like to know if this is an error coin and what sort or rarity and value it has.

thanks

It is possible that the coin was struck on a cent planchet, but I find this unlikely because the full design is showing which wouldn't occur with a smaller, thinner planchet. The nickel might be discolored or could have some copper coating from the copper wash (I think that is the correct term). What happens is that pennies are washed, some copper plating is removed, and is stuck onto the coins that are washed after the pennies. However I may be wrong, so chime in with your thoughts.

I'd imagine it's just toned or been wet at sometime. Hard to tell with a scan. If it's an off metal strike (doesn't look like it) you can easily verify that by weighing it.

I doubt it though - I've found nickels in almost any color you can imagine and it's all PMD or toning. Value is likely $0.05

I see quite a few like this in my vending machines, I believe it's just environmental.
