Does anyone know what uncirculated mint sets from the 70's and 80's go for at coin shows?

I've been thinking about swapping some of my collected-from-circulation coins for ones from mint sets, they are pretty cheap on ebay but shipping can be a significant percentage of the cost. How does the price+shipping on ebay compare to the price at coin shows?

Buy a coin magazine and you'll see approximately what they are sold for.

You have probably already looked at completed sales for those sets on ebay, making sure to look at the shipping charges (which are listed separately).

Another source I recommend is the FMV prices at NumisMedia.

Proof & Mint Sets FMV Prices

NumisMedia is a good guide for retail value. Prices at coin shows, in my experience, have never exceeded these prices.

Most will go for $6-$7 bucks. The 70' and 87' will be higher because of the halves being mint set only. The 73' will be higher because the Ike's were mint set only. I can't think of any other premiums. Mint sets don't get much play at the coin shows I've been to, you have to ask just to see if they have any. As far as ebay patience will win. If you take your time and watch for the deal you can get mint sets for below market but it may take a long time to get them all. At the coin show it will be grey sheet price plus or minus a small percent if they need a sell or not. Getting a large portion of them at once at a show might be worth the few extra dollars.

Ahhh.....Upgrading huh ? That is so much fun !
I tell ya, I was like the Tazmanian Devil, cracking all those Uncirc., Proof, and Silver Proof Sets to put the coins in my albums.
I kept my "circulation" albums and folders as they were, and just started new albums with all the older Sets that I purchased over time, and just had so much fun breaking those open as I went along filling holes!
Putting those nice quality coins in those Dansco's sure is a beautiful thing !
I'm at the point now, though, that it's cheaper for me to buy the coins I need "individually" rather than in the Sets, because I've already bought and used just about everything from the early 1960's to present day.

My local coin shop uses Grey sheet prices on everything........so for the most part, they were all REALLY cheap for me.

Thanks jbuck, I didn't realize they had the FMV for mint sets too.

It looks like I can get them off ebay for the same price or less (with a little work). I saw a couple auctions for a decades worth at once, that might be the fastest way to get them.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I ended up buying a bunch online, but not off ebay. Getting it from one place saved a bunch on shipping. I also was able to buy them (including shipping) for less than NumisMedia FMV price.

As you can imagine, people have had 30+ years to pick the best ones out and I went with the low cost option so they weren't perfect. Most of the coins from the 70s were toned and many sets had at least one scratched coin. The more recent the set, the better the coins looked.

Since I am comparing them to coins that have been in circulation for decades, I am very satisfied with the decision and will probably buy another batch.
