Got home from work last night and was excited to see a package waiting for me. I new it would be my newly purchased New Orleans eagle. I was quite surprised when I opened it up to find the coin had rotated about a 1/4 turn inside the slab. This is a PCGS slab that looks to be a few years old and it doesn't appear to be in any way tampered with. The dealer I purchased the coin from is someone with a stellar reputation.

How common is this? I love the coin, but it is a bit....I dont know what. LOL. Would PCGS re-slab this for me?

I had a similar situation when I had my $3 gold piece slabbed by PCGS about 10 years ago. It was loose inside the slab and easily rotated. I sent it back for re-holder service and it was still loose. I'm resigned to having to tap the slab gently to rotate the coin back to vertical alignment. I also have a first-generation PCGS slab with a Franklin half; this coin also rotates inside the slab.

Sometimes the PCGS slabs are loose! I haven't seen this problem with ICG or NGC. I have seen a couple small ANACS slabs with rotated coins.

some of the PCGS slabs can be tapped and the coins turn in the slabs to make them straight again

Thanks, I thought that was true for the PCGS "Rattlers", but not the NGCs. Good Info!

After some experimentation with "gentle " tapping I was able to find the sweet spot and the coin has rotated back to an upright position. I am glad I didnt have to re-submit because it has a CAC sticker and I didnt want to go through that process again as well.

I never said NGC I said PCGS. Its not just rattlers, all PCGS slabs can be turned that I have seen, just the rattlers are easier to spin, but the newer ones can spin as well. I don't think it would work with the new NGC slabs and probably won't work with the older NGC slabs either since its not just a ring the coin fits in like PCGS
