Hey everyone, I am on vacation in Gettysburg and decided to hit up the banks for Half Dollars today..Was able to snag around $50 dollars worth total. Only thing of note was a 1978 Proof coin..Its in ok condition, has a few scratches and thats it.. Was a little bummed there was no silver. I have a another $30 or so to pick up tomorrow from another bank. Hopefully some silver there.
On a side note, there s an antique shop here that has 2 roles of silver dimes for $65 each, will be picking those up tomorrow :)..
Thanks for looking! -Alan

These days $65 for a roll of silver dimes is a steal. It seems like just yesterday that I was wincing to pay that much for a roll of dimes. LOL!

You're in my neck of the woods now. I don't hit the banks, but I do a little metal detecting over there. Nice find at the antique shop...it's funny because as locals, we tend to stay away due to all the tourists. I had just told my daughter I should be checking out the antique shops in hopes that they don't stay abreast of the silver prices..guess I was right.

I live in Western PA, but take at least one trip to Gettysburg every year. If you can, take a side trip down Route 30 (west) to Fayetteville. There is an antique shop I stop at on my home each time I'm there. It's run by a very nice guy, and his coin prices are reasonable, though don't let his sticker prices scare you off. As soon as you show interest, the price always drops. The place is called "The Collector's Dream".

That's why I go to antiques stores. The other day, I found 3 Englehard 10 ounce bars for $30 each. Yup, I said EACH. Thought I'd died and went to heaven. Wish I hadn't sold them when silver hit $18 and ounce.

It was hovering around $18 for lso ong, so don't feel so bad.
I thought this thread was going to be about metal detecting at Gettysburg, which I'm sure a lot of people have tried before. I've been there once. I wish I had more liberty to roam around - was with a tour group.

Although I've never been there (I wish I could), I'm pretty sure metal detecting out there would not be allowed...and rightfully so. Gettysburg is hallowed ground. The blood spilled there is of far more significance than any metal trinket that might be out there.

You can still Metal Detect on private ground in Gettysburg. We have permission on 3 or 4 properties, but finds are still pretty rare.

Do your research and you will find that there are probably many battlefield areas and non-battlefield areas where the troops camped that are private property and which can be searched with permission.
