I have some sorting to do based on grade. There's a lot so I'm looking for a quick check to sperate out VF's fomr the F's. I think I'm ok on the EF's and up.

I've been checking out http://www.pcgs.com/Photograde/#/Lincoln/Grades but I'm having trouble.

So, if you had to pick 2 or 3 VF details for quick grading, which would you use?

Thanks,
Tim

I would suggest looking at the ear and bowtie. You want them to be bold for very fine and visible for fine.

I look at these areas, in this order:

a. the wheatstalks-ideally separated, but not always super sharp

b. some separation between the cheekbone and the jawbone

c. the area near the forehead and above the ear

I would PCGS' example of the VF25 piece for the lower end VF and the VF30 piece for choice Very Fine.

P.S. Lincoln cents are normally included in the Modern US Coin Grading forum here at CCF.

Bherring is right on target. Generally for VF the wheat stalks will be separated but not sharp. If they have any amount of wear that disrupts the separation and fuses stalks together then you are probably looking at F coins. I rely primarily on the wheat stalks and the wear on the face, jaw bone and cheek bone for condition diagnosis. I will also allow probably 5-10% fusing of the wheat stalks (very little in other words)before moving a coin from VF to F.
