Maybe some here can relate, but sometimes I buy things impulsively.

Here is an example of one of those impulse buys. I saw this and thought it would be cool to own a coin that could have been used in the first years of the USA.

My Impulsive ebay Buy

But now that I have it in hand I am concerned that it is not a contemporary counterfeit, as I expected it to be. Non-Regal and evasion coins were coins counterfeited in England and sent to America to be used, since it was illegal in Britain but not in America.

My question is how do I know it is not a modern counterfeit. It has a high pitch clank when tapped or dropped on glass and I expected a lower pitch similar to copper or iron.

Any thoughts?

I'll try and scan some of my forgeries for you. It amazes me that so many of them passed detection, as they are obviously wrong.
However we have a situation today in the UK where possibly one in ten of pound coins in circulation are forged, and they are commonly accepted as legal tender. Maybe the same in the late eighteenth century?

It certainly looks fine from the pictures - I've not heard of any Modern chinese copies of these coins. Probably all OK.

On flickr, there is a section in which someone is working to expose and bring attention to this problem. Take a look: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/
