I have a generally low opinion of Postmasters and Postal Clerks with certain notable exceptions (Brooktondale, NY; Guilford, NY). They seem to be the classic examples of the Peter Principle: promotion to the level of one's incompetence. I have been chasing down my mail all summer long and probably will be for some weeks after I return to my desert home; much of my mail went into a continuous loop between Salome and Flagstaff, AZ with my forwarded mail being forwarded back to my home PO and then reforwarded again. And, a certain Postmistress of a certain Washington State PO on a certain island is in Federal prison for embezzlement after unabashedly proclaiming to the world how great she was as a postmaster.
On the USPS plus side, my NY home Postmistress has never failed to forward my mail long after the forwarding expiration date, has faithfully emailed me to let me know it was on the way.
The best Postmaster, however, is also directly related to numismatics. Charlie Voorhees, PM of Brooktondale, NY was also a world class Morgan collector. By the mid-1960s, he had the complete Morgan series including the 1895 Proof; his collection numbered in the thousands of Morgans. He planned to retire early, cash it in, and live a quiet life unhindered by finances. He had a mild heart attack about 1970, went into the hospital for by-pass surgery, and died on the operating table.
