I think PCGS would AU-50 it. It has been cleaned, but not harshly.

Nice. It has that slight green cast as most Southern gold does. Looks AU53, possibly cleaned.

AU50-53, and a great rarity at that. Heritage opined earlier this year that fewer than fifty are extant in a grade above XF. I'll render no opinion about surface originality of gold from photographs; their color is square in the middle of the range which is most difficult to capture accurately with a camera. Absolutely submit to PCGS. The price differential over the other TPG's for this particular issue would nearly make up the loss if it's determined Genuine.

I agree with busthalf - EF45. Reverse brings it down below AU.

Considering that these coins are almost always have detail weakness before they circuate, I think it would make AU details quite easily. Possible cleaning, but I'm not sure if it is bad enough to keep it out of a problem free slab.

I don't have a current membership with PCGS so I paid my local dealer to send this coin in for grading. He just got back the email report on his submission and my half eagle graded XF-45. I think it might have made AU but the scrape and baggy fields on the reverse probably held it back. I'm not complaining! Problem-free XF-45 is a good outcome for this raw purchase. I'll post pictures after the slab comes back. It will be an excellent Christmas present!

You, sir, are a winnar. I suspect PCGS factored in the "created wealth" aspect with their choice of grade. The fields perhaps show a little more contact than they consider appropriate for an AU grade but the devices are consistent with examples PCGS has previously awarded AU.

Very nice result from PCGS. Charlotte gold was usually softly struck and I believe that coin is AU, maybe even AU53. My guess is PCGS docked her a few points for what they deemed to be a market acceptable light cleaning. Congratulations on the XF45 grade!

Coin in slab: genuine, no problems, it's good to get a pleasing result from PCGS. Should happen more often!
