I have a coin that is dated 1837, has a liberty head on the front, one cent on the back surrounded bu a reath(sp.?) It has 8 sides like a stop sign. Is that a fake coin? I cannot seem to find one like it on the internet. It appears to be copper.

It could possibly be post mint damage, or a token of sorts. As others have said, have to see a picture to know for sure.

I think it is post mint damage. Looks like someone might have filed it down. The stars and wording on the back is kinda smashed in.

I have an online friend who was asking about a coin with exactly the same description as yours just the other day. She had posted a photograph also. The penny is probably some type of token and I looked through my "Standard Catalog of United States Tokens" to see if I could find any coins resembling the one in question. No such luck, but I feel that it is probably rare if it isn't of fake. From the photograph it looked to be authentic and it was quite attractive looking. Is there any way for you to post photographs of your coin? Perhaps then others would have a better chance of identifying it.

It looks like the coin pictured aboce with 8 sides filed down. I will try to post a pic sometime today. It might take me a bit as I have never done that on here. I appreciate all the help.

Just a mutilated large cent, I've seen pieces like that before.

damaged coins are usually worth no more than half the price of an undamaged one, but can be worth much less. Finding collectors who don't mind damaged coins is tough, unless the coin is rediculously rare.
