Dear friends,
I have been using Lighthouse 2x2's (self adhesive) for five years since now. I put them inside same brand folders and separate each page with a same brand black separator. I was happy with that storage method until I bought some better grade and quality coins lately. I know and feel an adhesive 2x2 is the best way so far for airtighting a coin but I am worried that the mylar film may leave a residue (the company Lighthouse/leuchttrum claims it will not) on the coin. So I thought of upgrading to a coin box system with trays and coin capsules, even though capsules are not 100 percent airtight. (soem honest dealer I've been dealing told me he put one of them inside water and the water went inside the capsule - that worries me because if water goes through, air surely do and this means 2x2's are a better type of preservation)

Should I be worried about my 2x2's or leave them as they are and keep going with 2x2's?.. I've removed to see some coins that I put five years ago and have seen they still have perfect lustre and like the first day I've put them in.
I have, on the other hand, some proof silver coins inside capsules for five to seven years and have seen they're not toned as well.

I am very nervous about storing them the right way, so and advices are most welcome. I know some people here collected coins for more than my life, so I am sure I'll get the best advice onlien I can

Thanks.

They can tell me it won't get on the coins as much as they want, but I would still worry.

Depending on how high end your coins are, you could get them slabbed or put them in not-so-airtights. In bulk amounts, you can store them in bottles. I find that works well and preserves the coins well.

if they are not so airtight, speaking of round coin capsules, how can I trust to them?

Bottom line is that there is no perfect solution.

I use air-tite holders and put them in ziplick bags with silicon descant bags. The air in my part of TX is humid and coins tend to tone fast if not sealed.

I put mine in Mylars (Not self adhesive). I haven't been collecting that long, so I don't know what effect that will have on the coins. A relative of mine who collects has been collecting since the sixties and has had her things in holders like that for that long. I don't know if that preserved them or not, but I can ask her.

A good old fashioned seasoned mahogany coin cabinet works for me.

Any old cigar box works for me, but I'm partial to spanish cedar Macanudos.

And then there's the old pocket. That's where coins really belong. Today it contains an 1875A 2F Ceres, a 1918 2F Semeuse, an 1874 Finnish 2 Markkaa, an 1896 50 kopeck and a 1940 swiss 2 F. I woludn't call any of these numismatic treasures but they're fun to look at.

I've moved on Lighthouse Quadrums for some of my relatively high end coins (UNC better specimens of per type coins). I think they're safe enough as they are made of acrylic.

Weirdly enough, some 2x2's leave a residue, a milky, misty residue mostly on nickel and silver coins. It goes off with rubbing but I don't rub coins. I was shocked to see that. Now I am moving to quadrums and airtites hoping that they're safe.

How do you guys feel about the non-pvc "flips?" Do you think those are better for long term storage or would you rather use air-tites?
