The Royal Australian Mint did that sort of thing with 16 x 50 cent pieces with the 2006 Commonwealth Games, depicting various sports.

Newest 50 pence coin that I have seen are the 2008 Royal Shield. Still have not seen the 2008 regular design or any dated 2009 or 2010.

The mint will start circulating the first designs in november, the ones you can buy on their websire for £3 a pop. They expect the ciruclate 3 million of each of the designs to make up to somethinglike 87 million coins circulating!!
I think a lot of 2009 coins will not be found, the US is the same with the 1 cent coins. There are loads of 2010 1p coins out there at the moment.
Which designs do you think are the nicest, I like the swimming and basketball, but then I have seen the actual coins already!!

You never know. In the past it has taken a long time for 50ps to get into circulation, but due to the lack of coins in the last year or so, andaccording to some guy at the mint, at xmasish time, when people are shopping more, shops require more 50ps, you might get lucky!!

Well, I think the mint has expected these olympic coins to be quite popular, but quite frankly they appeared in one national newspaper, and online for a couple, the papers like the times and independent completely ignored this. I'm not sure how many people would actually know that they are coming out. But just to say, my interest in this is that I designed one of the coins. Not sure if I'm the first person on here that has designed a coin, but it's quite cool. Anyone care to guess which one it is.

Nope, I designed the first one of the horse, apparently one of the most popular subject to be designed by people.
Though 30,000 designs, 17,000 were the kids athletics coin. So in fact not many people entered this competition!

So I assume they're not in circulation nowadays, and possibly won't be this year too.

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/stand...-olympics.doNot sure what this means: Hornby, the maker of model trains, Corgi diecasts and Airfix planes, has won a deal to distribute 2012 Olympics 50p coins struck by The Royal Mint. The coins which mark 29 different disciplines go into circulation later this month. The collectors' versions in commemorative packs will sell for £2.99. So we can buy them from the Royal for £2.99 each or what.....
