I see a lot of slabs on large cents, and the occasional Indian cent marked 'Recolored'. My questions are: (1) what do people recolor with? (2) Was recoloring a more common practice 'back in the day' or is still commonly done? Something I've always wondered ...

Not much info out there on the subject but from what I've read, they usually dip the coin to remove the patina and it retones itself naturally.I've also seen chemicals for sale to rebrown pennies. From what I've heard, recoloring was more commonly done back in the 70's when people weren't as aware as they are today. The internet certainly has helped me learn a lot about coins.

Hopefully someone will pop up with this one. I know people die coins, electroplate them, acid dip them, paint them and only the great Guru on top of a mountain in Tibet knows how many ways there are to clean a coin. And I've seen some coins I would swear appeared to look like new and you can see wear on them. I've darkened coins with gun bluing but recoloring one is something that someone here might answer.
If you go to Google and type that in you are sent to another coin forum place.

From what I understand, recolored pennies are simply coins dipped to remove all of the toning and tarnish. You are then facing an unnatural looking penny that is a bright orange to pink. Recoloring are various steps to tone down the unnatural color to reveal a more subdued and aesthetically pleasing coin. Personally, I think recolored pennies can be very attractive if they are treated right, but then again it is taboo in the numismatic circles.

coinczar, I agree with you about them being attractive and really think a coin that has been cleaned or recolored shouldn't be considered "taboo" as long as it was done with care and the detail is still there.I've even sold a few that were cleaned and disclosed as such...and still got top dollar, so maybe there are more people thinking this way.
