I don't know, but I've seen many a nice note, ruined by those things. I know merchants need to protect themselves, I just think it's a bit of a bummer when a nice crisp note, gets written on.

I hate the pen test b/c it defaces the bill. plus, the watermarks are more important... you can bleach out a 5 and print a 100 on it and it will pass the pen test

Exactly.

The government puts watermarks, and security strips in the notes for a reason. I agree, completely. The pen just defaces the note, and isn't a fool proof test.

The pens here does fade over time (the marker that is yellow when the bill is real and black when counterfeit). My sister works at a bank, she found a 20$ bill with the green seal missing on the front and it is in reverse on back. She used the marker on it. I told her she shouldn't of done that. I got the bill from her and the mark she put on the bill faded away.

Im sure management finds it easier to train a cashier to use the marker. I have seen a few look at the bills but only at smaller mom and pop stores.

Management may use the pen until they take a few bleached notes, then the pen goes south and the ultraviolet/watermark detector comes in.
