I picked these up recently as part of a lot. It was clear from the pictures that they were pretty messed up so I didn't even count these when figuring my bid. They were basically free but they're mine now. Anything I can do to help these? I know they'll never be pretty again. I'm just shooting for less crappy, maybe prevent them from getting worse. Thanks Notice the VDB

Haven't tried it yet but Verdi-Gone may help these. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. WOLF

Wait for BadThad to chime in on this, but I think the damage is done on the wheatie. Not sure if anything can be done for the FE, either.
I think the best thing you can do for them is to quarantine them from your other coins!

Yeah, I think these have had rough lives. I just don't know what to do with them. I think I have to keep them. It is a FE and a VDB after all. I don't think they're much fun to look at like this and not worth much of anything either though.

The VERDI-GONE might help, not sure as I have never tried it. How about sending it to NCS for conservation? Probably not worth the price though.

When non-key coins get that bad it is probably time to bust out the wire brush and make yourself some nice shiny jewelry

Some of the active corrosion could be treated but you will still be left with severely pitted and corroded coins.

Just imagine the stories on their path to their present condition!

Personally I think I would carry them as pocket pieces with the rest of my change for awhile. (careful, don't spend them.) Most anything else that you could do to try to improve them would cost more than the coins are worth. I do't think even the pocket piece treatment could really help the VDB, but I think a year or two in a pocket with other change may improve the FE.

Tray putting them inside pure olive oil for a week, and after one week, flip them to the other side and wait one more week. It basically takes all the patina from the coin, but after soaking them to olive oil, rub the coin(s) with cotton and it will most probably take the green surface ad damage out of them, however, ruining the natural patina on the coins.

Thanks guys. I think I'll try the olive oil first and then maybe try carrying them around. Interesting coins to have in your pocket all the time anyway.

OR, you could give them as gifts to kids around you as we near Thanksgiving and Christmas? It may lead to blank looks like you're quite the strange uncle, BUT it could lead to a connection with a family member or somebody you know... =)
