Today I just bought nine proof sets '68,69,70,73,74,76,77,78,81. No silver. Edit: Oh, I guess there's a bit of silver in those early Kennedys.

My main goal was to get some Kennedy and Eisenhower proofs. (I got the '81 hoping for a type 2, but no luck.) I paid $100 for the lot. Was this an ok deal? I figured I'd have to pay a decent amount for the Ikes separately.

Another question: should I crack them open if I'm not interested in sets?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

personally I would keep them in the sets as if you plan on re selling them you will probally get more for them in orginal packing by the mint vs opened. I dont collect any proof sets unless there silver but when 2 2010 clad proof quarters came with one of my orders, I just throw them in my draw

Thanks, Bryan. So far, the hammer and chisel are still down in the tool room! :)

Do you think the $100 was reasonable? (In retrospect, it may have been a bit high, but they are tougher to get here in Canada.)

I recently bought a 68 proof set for $9 but after some research looks like $6 - $6.50 is more normal. Interestingly, these sets actually seem to depreciate; recent dates tend to be more valuable for the same mix of coins.

Sorry bibd but I got most of these for $6. Silver has gone up since then but I think you could have done better. I say crack them open. The more that get opened the more mine are worth.

It depends on why you want the Eisenhower dollars and Kennedy half dollars. If you are building albums, of course you should crack them!

I got 1968-1998 for only $125. The prices a bit high for non silver sets.

I think you did OK for $100 Canadian. Here are a couple of things to look for in some of those sets, and I hope you find at least one of them.

1968 Proof - dime no mint mark

1970 Proof - cent small date

1970 Proof - dime no mint mark

Thanks, Tim, for the tips on the dimes. I'll check those when I get home. (I checked the cent -- large date -- no luck!)

I can't believe how badly I got ripped off on those sets if they can be obtained for $6-7 each. What fooled me is that if I wanted to buy the proof Ikes alone, nobody seems to sell those for under $5 each (and I've seen them even higher). So I figured I wasn't out too much by getting the entire sets. I guess I need to learn to bargain hunt better!
