I bought this coin on ebay back in July of 2005 - about 4 months into my new hobby of coin collecting. The description was KEY DATE VAM 9 closed 9s - S TILTED RIGHT 1899 S MORGAN.
At that time I new nothing about coins, and VAM meant nothing to me. I knew I just wanted to buy some more Morgans, and this one came my way fairly cheap.
My question - is it really a VAM 9? My scans aren't all that good, but should give a general idea.

I cant really see the pictures of the coin enough to actually see the attributions enough to accurately attribute the coin, is there a way to crop the picture to where it just focuses on the coin without all the white background (that may get the picture big enough to attribute the coin). I looked in the book at the attributions of the VAM-9 and it is kind of vague to say the least and there is nothing to add to your description than what you have already said in your post, it just describes it as normal obverse with closed 9's and on the reverse has a centered S mint mark centered and tilted right. So either you can look at your coin through a loupe (if you can not enlarge the pictures) and see if it matches the description or you can try and enlarge the pictures in some kind of way and maybe we will be able to see enough detail to attribute it for you, but if it has closed 9's and if the "S" looks to be tilted a little to the right then chances are that it is attributed correctly, but if it has open "9's" then it isn't. Sorry I can be of no more help but it is just impossible to do with the pictures provided

These two closeups are about the best I can get with my little blue light special webcam, and my hands aren't as steady as they used to be, but, as I said, that's as good as it gets with the equipment I have. Can you tell anything about it by these two?
While I'm on it - I don't want to fork over the money for a VAM book just for this one coin which may, or may not, qualify.
Also, does a coin considered to be a VAM have more value than one of the same year and mint mark without the errors? I reckon it's pretty obvious that I know next to nothing about the world of coin collecting, so, in order to educate myself, I have to ask questions.

with VAM's its strange, there are some that are very sought after and can bring quite a bit of a premium and then they are others that do not add to the value at all. There are thousands of different VAM's and some are just not collected, it just about has to be a TOP100 or HOT50 coin to really see a nice premium. Some others do command a premium but its because there are more collectors of the series then they are coins to go around, the famous 1921 VAM-1X comes to mind (that SuperDave made famous on this forum) there are only 2 or 3 known to exist and chances of there being more are very slim so when you have a thousand people collecting 1921 VAM's and one specific VAM that there is only 2 known to exist, that particular VAM can pretty much set its own price. From the pictures you provided it does look like it has closed 9's and it kind of does look like the S is tilted so I will agree with the VAM-9 attribution from the pictures, and since the VAM-9 isn't a TOP100 or HOT50 VAM and since there isn't really a following for that specific VAM I doubt you would see any price increase from it

Okay - thanks. I'm not really looking to sell any of my coins, but it's always nice to know if you do happen to have something of greater value - something that everyone wants, and few have. Kudos to SuperDave on the 1921 VAM - 1X

Wait a minute - there's only one VAM-1X, and I don't own it. I don't understand how anyone got the impression that I do.
