I have been looking into buying some Australian coins. What beautiful coins. And wow so many different series. I like the Kookaburra and the kangaroo dollars. What would be the best source to purchase these? I've been checking out ebay just to see whats out there. Alot of these and others sources are in Australian dollars. Is that equivalent to US dollars? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Here are some web sites that specialize in selling Australian coins & banknotes:

www.newcastlecoins.com.au
http://oldcoin.com.au
www.prospectstampsandcoins.com.au
www.downies.com.au

Don't forget the official mint web sites:

www.ramint.gov.au
www.perthmint.com.au

And as for the Aus/US dollar value. Your dollar is worth heaps more than ours, at the moment every US$1.00 is worth about AUD$1.31 - I wish it was the other way around!

Hope that this information is helpful.

I forgot to mention that if you choose to buy from the Royal Australian Mint web site that you need to be prepared to wait (and wait, and wait, and wait) for your coins to be delivered.

In fact, I could probably get my arthritic Grandma to walk from Melbourne up to Canberra, buy your coins, and then swim across and hand deliver them to you in much less time than they will take!

Newcastle Coins is owned by "Big Fella", and he is a member of this forum, so you can contact him pretty easily to place an order. Oldcoin is owned by a man named Richard, whom I have bought from many times and I find him very trustworthy.

Newcastle coins is owned by an active member of this forum and
Bigfella- aka Shane has been a great help in obtaining coins. and his shipping has always cost me less than what the Mint charges.

I can say that I have also had success with the Mint and with some of the others mentioned but the best service has always been from Shane.

The only thing I buy direct and not from shops is PNCs and I have a subscription for them with Australia Post.
But Shane has also found me some PNCs that I was missing or replacing.
He also answers your email enquiries in a timely manner-
Oh Southern Yankee- I like you reside in the USA so I know the hassles of international shipping and collecting foreign coins

OK Shane with a free add like this I want a % --Only kidding.

Hilarious. So I take it they are a little slow.

Thanks Snooba & rggoodie for getting me pointed in the right direction. I will definitely check out these sites. The international shipping is the only thing that has been keeping me shopping in the states. I've heard of stuff being lost for months and the hassles of trying to track it down. That's a long way to go. Bigfella seems to be a good guy from all the post I have been reading. Well as they say keep it in the family. Thanks

You will find most parcels take about two weeks from down under to the states. I do not have much trouble with them not getting there. Richard can confirm this as he gets a parcel from me almost every month.

Thanks Bigfella I was wondering about how long it takes. The prices on your site are Austraian dollars I presume. Nice variety of coins you have there. What about coins you don't have on the site. Do you take requests for coins?

I have posted pictures of the 2006 rabbit on this site. I was initially disappointed that here were so many in rolls that I had. I thought they were going to be dime a dozen. Subsequent rolls I've opened didn't have any and no-one else has reported any, so maybe I just got lucky. Time will tell.
