Here's a section that will really interest the Aussie members, especially Snooba. It is about coins depicting Koalas, which, despite popular belief is not a bear, but a marsupial.I can think of 3 coins - H.R.P.P. coins inscribed 'Australia's Teddy Bear',an Aussie 50c.,& a gold $200.Can anyone else think of any others?

Hi Aidan,

1988 through to 2005 - All Platinum Proof coins featuring Koalas, in sizes varying from 1 kilo to 1/20 oz.

1999 - Platinum Specimen coin featuring Koala in 1/4 oz size.

Feel free to buy me the 1992 Proof Platinum Koala in the 1 kilo size, it will only set you back a mere $24,000.00 - it's face value is $3,000.00!

Koala is basically an Australian thing. I don't see what other countries would dare / care / bother to commemorative such mammals. And Snooba, do you know where such kilo platinum coins are for sale?

Snooba,is the price in US$,or is it in HRPP$? I have seen a silver 1 Kilogramme bullion medal-coin,but this was a few years ago now.You won't be able to put it into your coin album,I'm afraid! It's far too big,& besides,it would need to have an album just for the 1 piece.

Given a koala is only found in Australia and do not know why other countries would commemorate them either.

I doubt Australia would commemorate a bear as we have none or a deer as we have none or.....

I wish I knew! If you really wanted to look at one or buy one, I assume that Bigfella would be your best bet.

The Perth Mint seems to have sold out of kilokoalas. Only 2005 and 2006 platinums are listed, and they "only" go up to 2 ounces.

The 1 kilo coins seem to have stopped in 1997. After all, Australia isn't a platinum-producing country. We'd have had to import it from South Africa or Russia to make those coins. As to value, they trade at bullion+3%. At current prices (US$1220/oz), a kilokoala should set you back US$40,400.

Well, that depends. There aren't any wallabies on the Isle of Man, but that hasn't stopped them issuing coins with wallabies on them (KM#385, 1994 crowns) as part of the "Preserve Planet Earth" series. It wouldn't surprise me to find koalas in there somewhere, too. Other foreign places where koalas might be hiding are Liberia (all sorts of things appear on their coins) and "flags of convenience" for the Perth Mint, like Uganda and Tuvalu - such coins often have Australian themes. Japan would be a suspect too, given the "koala craze" over there a few years ago, but for their extremely frugal commemorative coin programme.

Seems you all forgot about the 2000 Sydney Olympics $5 Silver Proof series depicting Australian Fauna and Flora. The Koala and Flowering Gum was one of the coins in this series and 57,871 coins were struck at the Perth Mint for the Joint RAM & Perth Mint program.
