So in 42 there's a plain and a P mint mark. If I needed to search for the plain one in specific, what would be my best bet? I've tried searching for 1942 plain and 1942 P, but both results usually come up with the coin that has the P over top of the memorial.

More common than you might think. I agree with o.........x, a box or two should do it.

I guess I should have specified. I do actually already have one, I'm just looking to upgrade it and I didn't know what to search for.

If your talking searching on E bay.
I just did a search for "1942 Jefferson", it came up with 440 hits.
that pretty much gives you every one for 1942, but I like to look that way
because some seller type or enter their auction wrong.

With that search I saw a few nice 1942's that were listed as T1, type 1, no P
and some just 1942.

Of course with that search you will get the 42 D's and S's also.

Good luck.

Not a bad idea! I have found one that I'm watching, but I have a small coin show coming up that I'll probably hold out and see if I can get one there now.
