I just found this one out of a bank roll a little bit ago. I'm thinking it was struck through a lot of grease. What do you think?

Actuall that one appears to be much more like a very weak strike...no grease.

I would say weak strike and possibly hit with a hammer, the date especially looks flattened.

How do you tell whether it is a weak strike or Struck Through Grease? Notice the overall appearance of the coin- is it weak all over or in isolated areas? A weak strike will create areas of weakness at the points of highest relief, i.e. the deepest points of the die, while the areas with the shallowest relief have a better strike. If areas such as the peripheral devices are missing while the bust or Memorial are strong, then that is strongly indicative of being Struck Through Grease.

I figured it was Struck Through Grease since the weakness is not uniform, especially on the reverse. Notice how the O of ONE is strong, but almost all of CENT is weak. The top of the T in CENT is strong, but the bottom of the T fades nearly completely away. I also noticed that some of the letters on both the obverse and reverse appear stronger at the top of the letter, but weak in the center of it. Also, only the left side of the Memorial is weak while the right side looks normal.

I would have thought a weak strike would have generated weakness that was more uniform across the entire coin. Am I misguided in my thinking?

Whatever the cause, it was a cool find and certainly not "normal". It definitely earned "keeper" status.

Do you suppose it would worth any kind of premium above face value?

The weakness is not necessarily always completely uniform, especially on devices that have large devices on the opposite side of the coin - like the huge area of weakness in the memorial building. That area is very weak because it is exactly opposite the bust, which is a high relief area and has to use-up a lot of metal.

If this one is worth a premium to someone it would be a rather small premium. While it could be officially classified as an error, the more serious error collectors would skip it because they are easy enough to find in change.
