A coworker asked me to look at some coins for her and give her an idea as to value and while I can certainly give her a good idea on common date coins, this error is outside of my area of experience:

1980-Cent-Struck-On-1980-Dime

The coin is with the cert, I've seen it and it is definitely the coin on this cert and it definitely appears to be a real 1980 cent struck over a 1980 dime. It's not slabbed - I assume because it predates slabbing. All I had to take pictures with is my phone, so I thought this one turned out best.

Any ideas as to value? I have no intention of buying it (too rich for my blood) but I wanted to give her a realistic expectation of what it could be sold for. Is it worth resubmitting to get it in a slab?

1977 & 1982 coins like this one sold at auction three and five years ago in the $300 to $350 range. Those were cents on dime planchets and I would assume that this cent on a struck dime might be worth even more so I would think that if this coin is in uncirculated condition that it might fetch $500. Values are all over the place with age, condition, and the exact nature of the coin all having major impact on value but I do think that this coin is worth having slabbed and graded. A 2000 cent struck over a dime that was graded MS67 by NGC sold at auction for $977 in 2007.

As mentioned it is several hundred dollars. It is a nice coin and the ANACS Photocertificate is a nice touch as well.

A few hundred was the conclusion I came up with too - I think she'll try to just sell it to a dealer outright rather than bother to even put it on ebay.

A dealer would give her a fraction of its value. It would be worth the "bother" to auction it to realize near it's value. I would even offer to auction it here at CCF before taking it to a dealer.

I agree with Scooby. A dealer won't give you a worthwhile price for it. I imagine members here will pay it's value and give it a nice home.
ebay is another option. Anyway, you can easily get more than what a dealer would pay you for this.

I told her a dealer will rob her blind, but she'll have to get a quote to see for herself. If she doesn't like it, I'll certainly offer to sell it on ebay for her!

And thanks for the input everyone!

Very nice. I agree, avoid dealers. Auction it.

I didn't mean to make it sound like it was a bad thing!

What I meant was: I would even offer to auction it here at CCF. Period. Anything but a dealer.

Here you have a core group of error/variety collectors that would likely give her fair market value while the dealer might not even have any error or variety enthusiasts. If he sees it as potential overhead tying up money, he's even more likely to lowball you.
