What are people thinking when they list things like this?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...130453743288

1928 S Lincoln Wheat cent GEM BU RED FREE S&H LC45

Price: $3,499.99

Looks like an ok coin, but uncertified and worth nowhere near what they are asking. This auction looks dead out of the gate.

Am I missing something here?

To gain attention to his other 3000 auctions, most likely.

Agree. It's also gets extra traffic from people us who show their friends. I would bet he gets hundreds of views rather than 5 maybe.
Rest in Peace

If he had a "make offer" button I'd say he was trying to establish a realistic price for this lot. None here, so he's probably just touting his web site with cheap advertising, as Gforce and afclassic87 indicate.

All his other auctions seem overpriced as well. Just seems like a lot of work to list things that have no chance of ever selling at that price.

The above coin would have to be in an MS-65 RED slab from one of the top 3 to be worth that kind of money.

Interesting idea on the free advertising...

He has a good reputation like a seller so people trust him, once a while he can fish somebody.

If anyone sorts highest to lowest as a rule, they will see these overpriced entries. Pure bait.

There are several auctions on ebay with non realistic starting prices. But as mentioned its done for traffic and page views. Then there are plenty of people who just over value there coins and dont get any bids.

There are people out there are (1) Are not educated about coin values, (2) Have nearly limitless amounts of money, (3) Want to buy Christmas gifts for relatives. I think the high dollar auctions prey on that market. There is a gross imbalance in the U.S. economic system; 1% of the population has nearly all the money and many of them are not bright about how they spend it.

This is solely to attract attention to his store. Some folks believe any traffic to their store is good even if it is just bewildered people on forums.

Assuming he has a premium store account this advertisement cost him .05!
