I'm having an issue with an e-Bay seller over a $10 note that I won recently, and I thought I would ask you folks your opinion about it. The issue is that the seller wants to charge me $15 shipping to send the item (selling price of $17.99) from the US to Canada via regular mail. I think this is completely insane (considering a typical USPS regular envelope to Canada is around $1.25-$2.00), and I am refusing to pay until the seller comes back with a reasonable S&H cost. I have even offered to state in writing that I would not hold the seller responsible or file a PayPal claim should the note get lost or stolen in transit. My feeling is that the item probably sold for less that the seller expected, and he/she is therefore looking to make up some of the money through the shipping cost. What do you folks think, is it crazy on my part to have a problem with this?

Well it all boils down to the fine print. Does the seller state they shipto Canada? Did you ask what shipping would cost to Canada. It's kinda a catch 22 all the way around. I don't see this one ending well.

Did you inquire about the shipping charges to Canada before you bid?

If the shipping charge was listed, the buyer should be aware prior to bidding. If it was not, bidding before knowing carries this risk. I would feel obligated to pay, although I would NOT be happy with the seller's unwillingness to review the charge. If things haven't deteriorated too far, perhaps an offer to pay something much closer to $15 than to $2 would be an acceptable compromise prior to moving on. $15 is kind of crazy though.

Sounds like he is trying to make up for the low ending price but hard to judge without seeing the actual details. Can you give us more info so we can see the ended auction ?

I agree. If the seller stated the shipping charges in the listing, you really have no recourse. If the seller did not, you should have a done a little research and bid accordingly. If the seller refused to provide a shipping price prior to the end of the auction, you really should have just passed on the item and looked for another.

tell him up front that if he charges too much shipping it will affect his feedback.

I fully agree with what omahaorange said.
Could you please post the link to the item since without this, we can't give a good answer?

I ship here in the USA and it costs me anywhere from $3 to $6 (one note or 100 notes depending on insurance). Most I know charge between $4 to $8 and I stay away from anything higher than that. I do not know the rates to Canada but a regular envelope will certainly leave some marks on a chcu note IF there is no padding so to say.
My 2 cents - Mailing currency is not cheap when you are dealing with CHCU / UNC notes. $15 does seem high but others who have chimed in here have brought up some valid points which have led to your current situation and leaving negative feedback can go both ways in this situation based on what's been posted upto this point. Good luck.

Thank you to everyone for your feedback on this. In the end we are agreeing to cancel the transaction, but I should have been more careful about asking what the shipping costs to Canada were before bidding on the auction. I guess I wrongly assumed there would be no issue since I have done this many times before with no problems. As they say, all's well that ends well. Thanks again.

canceling was probaly the best solution. However I would never pay $15.00 shipping on a $18.00 item. When I see a seller who charges a overly high amount for shipping I wont even look at the auction. Negative feedback as a buyer isn't as bad as neg feedback for a seller.

anytime there is no shipping quoted to my area I always email the seller before I ever bid on anything to make sure I am alright with the shipping fee's. I have had one time when I first started using ebay back in 97 that a 50ยข item ended up costing me $25.00 to get to my house so I made sure I never made that mistake again and ask any time there is no shipping charge listed even if I am not sure I am going to win just so I can factor that price into my final bid
