I am curious why anyone would want to collect platinum coins as opposed to gold or silver. Does a platinum coin appear much different than silver? Just curious.

Well yes, platinum is a different coin that tends to lead to the gray side in color. Have owned a couple in the last few years, and was impressed with the coins, but they are very pricey and the demand isn't as great as gold and silver and like it or not DEMAND gives a coin a future. While I think everyone would like to own a truck load of platinum it just doesn't grab the average collector like the words "GOLD" and "SILVER"! I think, given enough time platinum will be accepted by the masses but right now it is just to new, to pricey and, in some areas, basically unavailable to the cross the counter buyer. It is definitely a different look!

I have seen pictures, but never seen one in person. The pictures make it look more like silver.

When you finally lay your hands on one you will most definitely know it is NOT silver. Personally I really liked the design and like the feeling that this is PLATINUM but actually collecting a date series, regardless of size, really would take a deep cut out of my coin budget so I sold off my entire holdings, which consisted of only 2 coins, and then the prices promptly went through the roof. I just thank God I was smart enough to sell before I could make a real big profit on them. Didn't want to damage my reputation or throw myself into a higher tax bracket (crying quietly here)! Darn it Susan, Now you have me wanting Platinum again and I know there will be a tzx refund coming! Oh the pain!!!

We bought some fake platinum coins two years back. (anyone remember the CoinWorld article). The entire eagle series have broken into the collector market. They are incredibly well struck, beautifully designed, and have the added bonus of containing precious metal. One added bonus of the Platinum is that the market doesn't swing as fast or as far as gold or silver. Adding a tenth ounce to your collection is pretty easy for most.

Finding platinum here would be like finding hair on a frog. ND just what is a 10th ounce selling for at this time? I think I can ask that here? None the less, I don't care who or where I buy from as I would like to have an example AGAIN in my collection.

Of course you ask...We don't sell any bullion, so I think that I can answer that without any trouble.
Platinum is trading at 864.00 an ounce this morning, so a Tenth Ounce would sell for roughly $100. Give or take a couple dollars.

Thought this might be a good time for some clarification. Statements and questions like the ones above are welcome. To not allow a member to make it known where his/her experience comes from is detrimental. For example, let's say you asked two people the value of a coin. One is a dealer and one is a buyer. They both give you two different answers. The buyer tells you that he buys all of the time and the seller can't say anything about where his experience comes from so his response is, "I just know". That just took all of the credibility out of the dealer's statement. Specifically making comments to sell items in this section is not permitted, but letting it be known that you are a seller/dealer will help people to understand your viewpoint and is constructive, in my opinion. I can't speak for ND, but I know that a great deal of the knowledge that I have to share has been learned through selling. It's part of what makes me who I am. Hopefully, this will make sense to everyone.

That does make sense Susan. Most of the people who know me understand that while I am an active coin dealer, my intention in participating in an online forum is to help others learn. I will try to answer all questions to the best of my ability, and will never try to sell you a coin (unless you ask). When all is said and done at the end of the day, I wish to be remembered as the man that taught and shared some info about numismatics, who just happened to sell coins also.
