Hello Folks,

I am new to this forum and I am mostly unexperienced in the world of numismatics. I have a shop and I buy silver, scrap gold, antiques and such, but I know nothing about this coin a lady brought to me to help her identify it and determine value. I was hoping you guys might be able to help me determine if this coin is 1. real and 2. what it might be worth if it is. Thanks in advance.

Rick

Hi Rick,

That is a 1787 New Jersey (Nova Caesarea) copper......There are several varieties, and yours is the straight plow beam, outlined shield type......value in condition shown would be $600-$700 if genuine. (How to tell if it is genuine by pictures would be quite difficult without a genuine example of the same obverse die to compare it to). My 'guess' is that it is probably authentic.

Hey Rick, Welcome to the CCF! Your coin is authentic. It looks like a Maris 15-J variety, considered common among New Jersey Coppers. A very nice, early piece of Colonial American history worthy of any collection. Nice coin! I put this specimen at the F15/VF20 level, with minor planchet flaws, commonly associated with these coins.

Thank you guys so much. I appreciate you taking the time to answer. My lady customer will be so pleased.

One more question if I may. Is ebay the best place to sell this, or is there a better route to go? Thanks again.

That is probably an unanswerable question.....I would suggest consulting a fortune teller or hypnotist, maybe an astrologer as well.

If your scared, just set an opening bid that you're willing to accept. Why pay extra fees for a reserve? 90% of buyers hit the back button when they see Reserve not met anyway.
