Intentionally acid-dipped? In an attempt to make it the same diameter of a dime? $.10 was worth a heck of alot more back in 1967...and there were vending machines on every corner.

that's my guess...

Imagine being able to put four cents into a cup of coke and come out the next day with 40 cents to use in vending machines. 40 cents would buy today's $5 worth of soda in 1960 (at 10c each).

I miss vending machines and pay phones
They were great and cheap if not free. Only downside
was, as little kids we spent silver dimes like they were just dimes.
What was really cool back in the early to mid 70's was the new coin fed
car washes and vacuum cleaners. They were a quarter a pop. We had a way
to get our washes and vacs. for free. You took a pepsi can pop top and snapped off the ring. Then you would flatten the rest of it (the tab part) then put some duct tape over it to make a little handle. Then just slide the end into the coin slot and hold it there while you turned
the knob to start the machine. Then once running just pull it back out.
Of course I could never do something like that
I washed and vacuumed my 1965 GTO 2 or 3 times a week.
We were just frugal then not cheap
