How much cash did you give him?

Do you happen to know if he knew the value of an ounce of gold?

Hopefully they were safely stored in an opaque brown bag and not just handed back to you loose. :)

Must have been an MS-grade 1893-S Morgan, to get $6.02 back in that form...

Really you went to a coin dealer and purchased these, right? I can't see how someone would do a transaction like that on the street!! Unless they were stolen.

Tempting sometimes to give a nice coin as a tip but I'm worried the waitress won't know the value and will get ticked particularly for say a 64 jfk
