Was on ebay and found what I think may be an error coin. Thing is, I don't know for sure if it's an error, but I'm pretty sure, and if I ask one of you to look at it, I'm afraid they'll bid on it and drive the price up. What can one do?

Sounds like: A) figure out if it is an error on your own B) ask for opinions here to make sure it is an error before you get ripped off C) nobody here would bid on it just to drive the price up D) if it is an error that someone here were interested in, they probably already know about it and have/are going to bid on it anyway

I just got to look through a roll today and noticed a couple bumps like that on the edge/rim at various positions. Maybe the blanks went through the rollers that create the rims and it was a tad tight, raising the rim some and when struck they flatten out that way. I would not have much interest in this, maybe somebody else would. Just looks like carelessness in QC.

I thought there may have been a clash on the left side of the obverse, but nothing matches in the fields in that area.

@coop: I'm no expert, but that doesn't look like a real picture of anything. It looks photoshopped.

It is just an image to show what the die position would be during a die clash. The marks in the field might have been explained in the original posters image, but it doesn't match. It is just a photoshop overlay, not a real coin.

I think he is just looking at the rim portion between 5 and 8 on the obverse.

Yes I was looking the rim. So this would be an error then if what wheezydog says is right.

This almost reminds me of a planchet that wasn't seated yet and the strike pushed it into the collar leaving the marks on the obverse rim. Depending on how the reverse is affected it may be worth a very modest premium.

Winning bid was $4.30 with $1.99 sh. I bid on it but didn't want to spend that much on it, without knowing for sure if it is considered an actual error.

I was waiting for the pros to chime in. Apparently, everyone seems to have about as much interest in them as wheezy. I hope you didn't think my first post was rude, Ken. It wasn't meant to be. I was just trying to help prod you in one direction or another. I'm glad you asked for opinions!

But what wheezy said was "Just looks like carelessness in QC." Isn't that how errors get into circulation to begin with?

Quote: Isn't that how errors get into circulation to begin with? Yes ...... but not all errors are exciting enough to command a price premium above face value. Such is the case with this coin for the experienced collectors ... Lastly ..... we are here to help ..... ask any questions you want ...... without fear of Quote: I'm afraid they'll bid on it and drive the price up David
