I received this coin from someone that had been shopping in my store. I was given a handful of change for a purchase, as I was putting the coins in their right slot I noticed this quarter had no laminate ring around it. Automatically I assume I have a silver proof quarter, I look it over and it is in pretty good shape and then I notice the mint mark, it is a "P" and not a "S". So when I get home I weigh the quarter 5.65 grams. If it was silver plated wouldn't it weigh a little more than what it does? Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you
Mike

Do you have obv. and rev. pics?
By the edge pic you provided, looks pretty shiny. I'm betting silver plated or some other plating.

Many marketing companies have sold gold and silver plated State Quarters since 1999 and quite a few of them have been spent after the owner finds out they are only worth 25 cents. The plating adds a negligible amount of weight so you have the correct weight for a normal CuNi clad coin and not a silver one.

Ask a question because you do not know the answer and some SMART #$^ has always got to show their intelligent level. I sure hope this site is better then that. The first two answers, I would like to thank you very much for your help.

Whoa, wiz33064. to the site, and everyone here is out to learn something at some point, whether they are looking for it or not. lincolncentguy was probably just wondering if that was who sold them. It probably is silver plated, or some other shiny metal that resembles silver.

Believe me, this website is one of the best I've ever found.

A 90% silver quarter should weigh 6.25 grams, the nominal weight of a clad coin is 5.67 grams, so your coin is definitely clad. That doesn't absolutely mean that it has been plated. Once in a long while the edge of a clad coin is massaged enough by the cutter and the (my "early stages of dementia" brain has just forgotten what you call it) thingy that raises the rim to mask the core entirely.
