Wow -- I notice this date really seems to have taken off the past few years! It has gone from little over junk silver to semi-key date, and this in a down market for coins! (I'm complaining because I'm trying to get one!)

Only a cool million minted and the price really jumps past F12. Good luck with your quest.

I got one for melt the other day that I would call a G4, so they are out there. I also got a 1913S, a 1904S and a 1901O for melt in various low grades.

nod: That's incredible, especially the 1904-S! Congrats! I'm in Canada and don't have ready access to bulk Barber dimes, but I can score some other cool things at melt or bargain-bin prices.

Well the 1904S I would only estimate at a FR2, but it is still not a melt value coin in my opinion.

I like barbers in general but the only problem to complete sets (dimes + quarters) is the price of the keys.

bryan: Yes, completely agreed -- I just personally try for all coins under some value in low grade (say under $20) or for some goal of representing nice grades, all mintmarks, or a contiguous date/mm run (say 1900-16). For really classic stuff, I just try for single type examples. I found a barely recognizable bust dime for melt a while back!

I love these dimes--I was doing some reading and around the date they were used people were paid for a days work--with a dime! Thats why alot of them are almost worn smooth!

I wouldn't mind having a 1909-S Barber dime for my album also.

DOWN MARKET? Not sure what things are like by you but I go to about 2 to 4 coin shows a Month and just don't see a down market in coins. At the coin show last Sunday I would ssy the coin prices are nothing but UP. I'm really having a problem finding that 1894S Liberty Head Dime anywhere. And here is something to think about. With the population of the USA at over 300,000,000, then you add Canada and Mexico, there well could be 10 or more million coin collectors out there. Maybe much more. So any coin with 1 million minted is just going to become real, real tuff to find, EVER.

Carl: I suspect you may be right about the market being strong, but many others (here on CCF especially) are saying some great bargains can be had. Personally, I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Prices seemed a bit hotter a year or so ago. But I am completely out of touch with the US coin show market. Maybe the weakening E-Bay prices are due to a different dynamic at play.
As for the 1 million mintage versus millions of collectors, that's very true. It's just that Barbers are not that popular with non-serious collectors out there. Compare with the 1914-D Lincoln at the same mintage, but 10 times the price!
I'll keep looking for my 1909-S (and hopefully get one before your 1894-S)! I'll race ya! haha
Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving.
