I am not a professional photographer. In fact I really don't want to invest a lot of money into a camera that I won't use for much besides family gathering and taking the occasional picture of a coin that I might put on ebay. But still, it's nice to have a good photo as it helps to sell the coin.
What do you recommend that I use to take a good picture? Flash, no flash? Color of background? How do I get the detail when I am showing a particular location on the coin - like water lines. What sells a coin better the obverse or reverse? Is it important to use a tripod? Will a 5.0 meg digital camera do the job or do I really need to invest in something?
Looking for some advice.

Have you checked the photography thread? Your camera is fine for taking coin photos. There are some great tips that many members have posted in the coin photography threads. Many answers on flash, background and lens size. Check it out, it's in the main forum.

Have you considered an inexpensive scanner. They produce great images with a minimum of fuss.

No flash, use a single direct overhead light from a white light source, minimizing glare and shadows. The use of a tripod or copystand for macro photography of coins is mandatory as well as using the timer. Almost all digital cameras have automatic timers, it is better to use it than manually pressing the shutter button because that will shake the camera. What sells a coin better is clear large images of both sides, many collectors will ignore an auction with photos of only one side. 5MP is fine, I get some pretty good results out of a five year old 4MP camera The important feature is optical zoom, the higher the better. Ignore digital zoom, it is just software manipulation and does not add to quality.

I appreciate all of your ideas on how to improve the picture quality. Will start to use them next time I am taking pictures. Thank you!
