Today when I bought 50 Kennedy silver halves, the dealer said there would be a sorting fee, or premium, to seperate the Kens from the rest of the 90%. The amount of the fee was about $10. What looked like a teenage kid picked out the coins and ran 'em through the old counter. Bad enough to pay 20X face, then add this fee. Kind of a stuffy place. Last time I bought there, a year ago, there was no fee. When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

Yeah, you should be able to do better than that. The guy is kind of gouging because people are going crazy for silver, but not really because you didn't have to buy them.

The easiest solution is to not buy coins from them. I would have told him where he could stick that fee. Just go somewhere else. These guys make plenty of money on the spread, there is no reason at all to bang you for another 10 bucks. You shouldn't have bought them.

I wouldn't have bought them...it really makes no sense to me when somebody mentions a business doing this or that, then they do business with them anyway. As long as the guy can do it and people keep buying, he has no reason to change.

If you picked them out yourself why is there a sorting fee? It just shows that he bought a bulk load and doesn't have the energy to properly label his merchandise, and he's STILL passing on the tax to you. You have more power than you think. If you can't reason with a person, then they are stubborn which is another way of saying too lazy to change one's preferred mode of life.
I think a lot of retailers have to start valuing returning customers and not just trying to cash in on a shining craze. Money makes people do inhumane things.

I wouldn't buy for this reason. If he's not sorting there could be something great in it though.

The reason I paid his price is because he's the only game in town for 35 miles, and I can never find silver below melt (even advertising) unless I'm roll hunting. I didn't sort these coins, his help did. I specified Kennedys because they are a last year 90% issue with usually the least amount of wear. They also were in my budget, and about the same or better price than ebay. I appreciate everyone's replies.

Quote: The reason I paid his price is because he's the only game in town for 35 miles That's the reason right there that he's doing this. This isn't the first time I've heard of a dealer's lousy tactics to make more money in a area that there isn't any competition and frankly it stinks. What a loser dealer, makes me appreciate one dealer in particular in my area that sells me stuff for exactly melt price and letting me have all kinds of coin collecting supplies for free just because I am a known customer and believe it or not on more than one occasion he has actually referred me to another dealer that can pay me more when I sell my 40%'ers and 90%ers.

my regular shop sells 1 oz. bullion at a set price, but there is a 50-cent charge (per piece) if you choose which ounces you want.
The fee is new, and so far does not apply to junk silver.

What I still can't understand though: if you only paid for the 64s, then what was there to sort? It's so obvious he had a huge bag he got at way below last year's price. If anything you should've gotten a discount for taking so much off his hands and letting him turnover his merch.
@specksynder: Somehow I like that approach better. This handling fee probably balances out for the year-set collectors.

Libertad, I'm not sure of the amount of junk silver this dealer has on hand. Locally, there's a couple more in the area but they can't keep anything in stock. What's being sorted is (slick) Walkers and Franklins from Kennedy 90%.

Dealers in my area are mixed. Some allow people to cherrypick while others will just grab from the pile which will usually leave you with pretty well worn pieces. Most at coin shows will not allow people to cherrypick if they brought a bag of junk silver because it ties up table space for someone to search and ties up the dealer's eyeballs.
Honestly, from having worked in a coin shop, I can see why an owner would charge a premium for a specific type or allowing people to cherrypick. I can say this because we had customers who did this, and would clean us out of the good stuff and leave the well worn less desirable stuff behind. Another time, an older gentleman came in the store and cherrypicked through all the junk silver for about 7 hours, tying up counter space and tying up the time of the person working there. After awhile, we made it store policy that cherry picking wasnt allowed and if someone wanted $x.xx amount of junk silver we would give them the option of deciding on what mix of dimes, quarters and halves but then the coins were just grabbed from the pile at random. Only one customer complained and it was the main offender who would clean us out and leave the worst stuff behind but it didnt stop him from buying after that either.
