I recently bought a 1964 proof set and the cellophane packaging was damaged to a point where all of the coins other than the quarter were in the same pocket. The silver dime and half dollar seemed to be unaffected, but the penny had a greenish toning on the obverse and the nickel looks very strange.

It has a very uniform gunmetal blue color on obverse and reverse to the point where I initially thought it was fake. I've since cut the coins out and the nickel is really very attractive in hand. Has anyone seen this before? Will it add any value?

I'll try to post pictures, but I don't think I'll be able to capture the color in a photo.

Yes, it's common on proof nickels. They tone blue and gold in the package and can be very attractive. I have a couple of them myself. I recommend moving the proofs to Air-Tite brand holders so the toning halts where it is.

Yes it is quite common for the nickels as Thad said, I am actually trying to put together a set of blue toned proof nickels. If you end up wanting to sell it let me know, I need a '64!

I have seen that before too...they tone in the packages and turn out looking pretty cool.

Thanks for the info. I'm not much of a proof collector, but I do like the look of this nickel. I'll probably keep it, but I'll let you know if I change my mind, jokingjoker.

Some of my late 1950s & early 1960s proof dimes and half dollars are toned the deep blue as well as the nickels. My 1957 D & H, 1958 N, 1959 N, D, & H, 1960 D, 1961 D & Q, 1962 D, and 1963 N & D are all evenly blue toned (Nickel, Dime, Quarter, Half). A couple of them are also hazy and I am leery of dipping them because I like the blue and don't want to lose it.

I've seen some blue toned nickels from that time period and yes they are very attractive. I have a Buffalo nickel that I bought some time ago and it has a bluish tone to it which I like very much. That is why I purchased it in the firs place!
