In the past, I have bought coins on auction sites and several from the forums here. For filling common dates in modern US coinage, can any of your recommend some sites that carry a good assortment at decent price?

A side question also. I heard once that when filling common dates, it is much cheaper to buy the entire mint/proof set for that year then purchasing them individually? Does anyone disagree? For the most part, I only collect Lincolns so I would end up having to either start new albums or sell off the rest which I don't have the time or desire to do. Thoughts?

Thank you.

i put together all my modern sets like lincoln memorials, jeffersons, roos, etc all at once by buying an all unc set of the series. I dont know if thats the cheapest way to do it but it was certainly convenient.

A couple of the Kennedy halves and an Ike dollar were only available from mint sets, so I did purchase these and break them apart to obtain them for my set, as it was significantly cheaper than buying the single coins. As far as the Lincolns go, I believe all business strikes were issued for circulation, so grade would be your primary consideration. Mint sets are cheap, and you could recoup some of your costs by selling the other coins. I get my modern circulation strikes (quarters and halves, along with the past two years of Lincoln cents) from a flea market vendor. I'm sure there are web sites that do sell modern coins, a Google search should start you out.

I've been just gathering my modern coins from change. It isn't super important to me that they be in pristine uncirculated condition. I'm partial to 19th and early 20th century coins of which I'm much more persnickety about!
