Let's move on to another emperor. Hadrian introduced a large variety of busts on his coinage and there is a decent variety to be had on the bronze and silver coinage. Here is a sestertius (Meldercat mentioned that he has a liking for bronze issues). Obv:- IMP CAES DIVI TRA PARTH F DIVI NER NEP TRAIANO HADRIANO AVG, Laureate bust right with drapery on far shoulder, strap across chest from right to left shoulder Rev:- PONT MAX TR POT COS, FORT RED/S C in two lines in exergue, Fortuna seated left holding rudder and cornucopiae Minted in Rome. A.D. 117 Reference:-- BMCRE 1111. Cohen 751 var. (cuirassed). RIC II 541a var. (cuirassed). Quite a scarce coin. Regards, Martin

Thanks for sharing this. Anything Roman brightens my day and Hadrian was one of the more interesting of the Emperors.

Hi Martin, nice coin! Man I love coppers. I have a few Hadrians. I'll list for the group. If you have any coppers you want to sell or trade for silver let me know. Kieran (Meldercat).

Hi Guys (and Gals). Here is a Hadrian Dupondius I'm having problem attributing. I have checked the usual sites and my Sear books. HELP! Thanks, Kieran

It looks like Felicitas, making it FELICITAS AVGVSTI, to me and there is a match in RIC - 598b (Radiate draped bust) and 598c (Radiate draped and cuirassed bust) match with this reverse. Regards, Martin

Hi Martin, Good call on the Hadrian RIC 598. I found a similar one on the Stacks auction site. Can you get The Roman Imperial Coins volumes in digital format? Both you silver Hadrians are nice though the denarius is spectacular.

You cannot get hold of RIC in digital format legally as it is still in copyright though I know that there are digital copies around. BMCRE is better than RIC for the period it covers though. I thought that I would also share a rare eastern mint example too. These are not very well studied at all and are generally very rare. Obv:- HADRIANVS AVGSTVS (sic) P P, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:- P M TR P COS III, Minerva standing right holding inverted spear in right hand, resting left hand on shield Minted in Eastern mint. Reference:-- BMCRE -. RIC-. RSC -. Only known example to date with this combination though the reverse die is know and documented but with different reverses. Martin

My only Hadrian denarius. HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, bare head right / FIDES PVBLICA, Fides standing left, holding a basket of fruit and grain ears. RIC 241a? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have several Hadrian coins, but this is the only one I've downloaded into my CCF Gallery: It's a Liberalitas sestertius, with the reverse a classic piece of propaganda: the emperor seated on a high throne, watching as Liberalitas pours coins into the waiting arms of a citizen below. It's quite worn, but it comes from the estate of one of Brisbane's earliest coin dealers; it was one of the few coins he kept when he sold the business. It's also the only ancient coin I have that I can confidently say has not just been dug up recently; it's been in collections here in Australia for at least sixty years. I've also got an eastern mint denarius, a COS III moon-and-stars type. I don't have the obverse downloaded, but here's the reverse: The S is backwards, the O is filled in, and the stars are scattered messily about the place instead of being in a neat, tight hexagon. There's also an accidental "eighth star", the centration dot right in the middle, which was supposed to be assimilated by one of the stars. I guess it was the apprentice's turn to make this die!
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Nice coins everyone, I'm busy packing for the move so I really don't have the time to post any coins right now.

Y'all could post coins like these until ccf runs out of bandwidth, as far as I'm concerned. Beautiful!
