Hi, I've just been reading some pots about buying rolls and boxes to check through coins and complete collections. Can someone tell me what a box is and where you can buy it. Also can you buy rolls of coins from somewhere else other than a bank? Thanks for your help.

Hello Angelos50 and welcome!

You can go into most major banks and request to order boxes of coins, most of the time provided you have an account with them.

Boxes come in different amounts depending on denomination.

Pennies = $25
Nickels = $100
Dimes = $250
Quarters = $500
Halves = $500
Dollars = $1000

Some banks also order bags of coin, however none do in my area. I believe the monetary amount varies between bagged and boxed coin.

You can occasionally buy a roll from a store, but this is uncommon and I've never attempted. Most of us just use banks. Good luck if you plan on starting this addictive endeavor!

In some areas banks keep researve quantities of coins in bags for customers with a necessity for bulk coins. Such places as Laundromats or Arcades. If you have an account in such a place they may sell you some. Bags of Cents are usually $50 and since possibly laying around for years might well be a better deal than rolls. Problem is many will not give them to you unless you can prove you do have a buisness that requires them.
As a general rule most boxes of rolls and separate rolls have been gone through over and over and over.

i personally believe that Jefferson nickels are probably the only set that you might realistically complete, entirely from circulation. I think all the rest have too many rare coins to expect to find in circulation.

Nickels are pretty easy using boxes. Even the War Nickels show up in boxes.

I have gone through about 10 bixes of nickels and found 1 silver nickel, one Liberty nickel, and about 40 buffalo. I found 35 in 1 box and could read all but 1 date.

angelos50, yes just go to your bank and ask if you could buy a box. Since halves are not commonly circulated they most likely will not have that on hand and may offer to order one for you, but the other denominations they usually do have available. Nickels earn my top vote in terms of variety. Buffs, war time, foreign coins, proofs, pre-50's, and more can be found. Fun stuff if you have the patience for it. Keep in mind find percentages can be quite small. On average you can expect to find 1 war time (silver) nickel per box (actually slightly less than that).

Other things to keep in mind:
1) Don't return your coins to the same bank you received them from
2) find a bank that takes bagged coin deposits. This save you the hassle of re-rolling.
3) The free option on coinstar is also a great way to get rid of unwanted coins. You have to get a gift cert of something if you use that option, but since it's christmas now great way to get Amazon credit to buy gifts with and get rid of coins at the same time.
