It may have been dipped, if there isn't any luster in hand.

I am not an expert but will share my opinion. It appears to me that it "could" have been dipped. Though there is a loss of detail in the Monticello monument the surface seems to be very smooth and even. Also notice the same on Jefferson's hair. I could be wrong.

The pics are inconclusive. They're both too small, and wrongly lit, to highlight mechanical cleaning which would cause the noted horizontal lines. Although the lines *could* be planchet striations, I'm leery because I wouldn't expect a planchet to reach the press with striations so strong that they survived the strike still visible on the devices.
I would not touch this one except to find out whether it's original, as self-education. It would have to be a solid MS66FS to be worth the asking price, and the pics are far too small to even attempt grading at Gem level.

I thought the coin looked nice, but I'm not willing to pay the asking price.
I'm really trying to educate myself more than anything. What about dipping a coin would cause those lines?

Quote: What about dipping a coin would cause those lines? Nothing, dipping doesn't create lines of any kind. It's difficult to tell, but I don't think the lines were caused by a form of mechanical cleaning although anything else has to be guessed at given the small and bad pictures the auction has.

I posted a reply awhile back concerning rotating a coin and checking the luster swirl of the coin.I would say buyer beware. In todays market I have found mail order guarantees and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee at McDonalds.Digital pictures lie more often than not.

I would stay away from this one ....... the obverse horizontal striations are a sign of something ..... and as SuperDave correctly points out the strike would have eliminated any planchet markings. Also ..... that is mucho expensive at $39 for an un-slabbed coin with such poor photos. Agree with SuperDave that at PCGS MS66 it might be worth considering. Lastly ..... not even sure it is FS as advertised ..... the poor photo shows some step weakness on the right edge ..... but could that could be the photo. BTW ...... if you are interested in acquiring some War Nickels I have six (6) PCGS slabbed coins all graded MS66 or better ...... duplicates from my growing registry set. I can make you a better price on them than this uncertain version on E-Pray. David
