who wins and accumulates coins by sticking my nose in an auction that I never even knew I was interested in and where having some action was probably 50% of the reason for bidding? The prices are always good to reasonable, never more than I can afford and always for something I like adding, but my susceptibility to the copper, silver and gold bugs sometimes surprises me.

You are not alone...I've accumulated a ton of stuff I don't collect by doing just that. And I've gotten some major deals by doing it.My problem is that I have a hard time selling what I don't collect...once I get something in hand,it's just hard to part with even though I know I can make a good profit.

Yes, I too will bid on a coin lot that I don't really want if it is a good deal. I have 15 pounds of foreign coin in a bucket on my desk right now from a large bag I bought over a year ago for next to nothing, around $20. I have traded some away and put others in 2x2's. Once in a while I will grab a hand full and look through them for others that I may want to keep.

I love bidding on a pig-in-a-poke in auctions. Maybe after a large number of years my memory is getting selective, but in many boxes of books, coin lots, etc., I seem to come out ahead. I found a Parker 51 fountain pen, sans cap, years ago in such a lot, and after having it cleaned and a cap added, I used it every day to grade papers (in Parker green ink, of course). I've found single books that were worth far more than what I've paid for the lot (no "Tamerlane" so far, though), and all of the lots of coins I've bought, both by the bag and in online auctions, have yielded little round treasures that are now part of my collection. Auctions are like metal detecting - you never know what you'll turn up next.

I find a lot of good stuff buying lots at auctions. I actually make out better by the lot than by bidding on single coins.

Not me. I stay far away from all auctions ever since I met an old friend that works for an auction house and is payed to bid on stuff to pump up the prices. That made me stay away from all auctions.

Hey Carl, I have the feeling some folks also to this on ebay and sites like that. Thay have a few friends that go along with the bidding and pump up the prices here and there. It wouldnt surprise me in the least that this happens at live auctions to. It's to easy to get away with it!

I will admit to bidding - independently, I might add - in auctions just to bump the price a little, especially in those where the proceeds were going to a good cause.
