On the scan I've attached, you will notice a black semi-circle on this 1896 Morgan. It begins at the tip of the upper leaf, and ends at the tip of the bottom leaf. It has been suggested that someone may have laid a small rubber band on it, and it remained there for an extended period of time, thus, creating this ugly mark on an otherwise beautiful coin. What do y'all think might have caused the mark? And, is there any way to remove it without disturbing the luster?

Oops! I tried posting my scan, but I keep getting a box telling me I must be logged in to use this feature. I'm logged in - am I doing something wrong that is preventing me from attaching the scan for viewing?

Just for the heck of it, grab a dime and a cent and see if either of those match the size of your circle.

Nope - too small for a dime or a cent. I even tried a Half Dime - smaller than that too. I don't have any coins smaller than that, so I'm back to square one. Any other suggestions? And, is there any way I can try to remove it without damaging the surface?

definitely not a thumb print, is it like dented in like something circular was pressed against it or is it a foreign material on the coin? if it is foreign material then maybe some 100% acetone will get it off but if it is dented in then that means something was forcibly pressed against the coin (not sure what, but it was a perfect circle, and I don't think a rubber band would have cause it, unless it is a foreign material and maybe it had gotten hot and kind of melted on the coin)

It's not a dent. In hand it appears to have been something that laid on the coin for a period of time, or the coin was on it. It could have been something hot touched against it because I can clearly see it has two sides to the line. It's not a complete circle in that it begins at the top leaf and ends at the bottom leaf. I'll buy some acetone and try to remove it. Anything I should know about applying acetone to a coin - i.e. on and off real quick - let it stay on the coin for awhile, etc.?

acetone will not harm the silver coin at all. Here is how I use acetone on my coins if needed, I take a Q-tip and saturate it in the acetone and then massage the coin with the acetone, You can also soak the coin in acetone if needed, then just rinse in warm water and pat dry, Do Not Rub The Coin With A Towel To Dry It always pat it dry

Okay Bryan, thanks. As soon as I get some acetone, I'll try it out on this one, and let y'all know the results.

be sure to get 100% acetone, not nail polish remover, 100% acetone will still probably say its nail polish remover but will also say 100% you want to be sure it is 100%. You can get it at CVS and other places like that for a couple dollars for a pretty good sized bottle
